To Beat Global Warming, Elon Musk Reminds The World That All Tesla Patents Are Free For Others To Use

On January 31, 2019, Elon Musk took to Twitter to remind everyone about Tesla’s patents available for free for anyone to work upon reported The Daily Star. In 2014, Musk in a blog wrote that the company’s patents are available for the public use, with a hope that more third-party company blend together and start making electric cars. He mentioned that Tesla will not file lawsuits against anyone who, “in good faith” uses the company’s technology.

Why did he reiterate?

Musk’s announcement was not sudden, as it came on the heels of severe cold due to the polar vortex being reported from some places in the US. Chicago is witnessing colder temperature than Antarctica. Musk has earlier mentioned that it is not competing for the market share or to outrun its competitors in the production of electronic vehicles, but to focus on a bigger picture. Making the patent for public use also meant that third-party companies will design more charging stations which will help Tesla cars and even other electronic vehicles in the market.

With the US facing a significant drop in the temperature and Australia seeing a noteworthy rise in mercury, global warming is not a concept anymore. Musk said that gasoline vehicle is the primary threat here, and all the car producing company should coalesce to produce more electric vehicles.

Why can Tesla alone not achieve the target?

Musk said that earlier he felt compelled to file patents for Tesla to prevent big car firms stealing their technology reported India Times. However, he later realized that major manufacturers producing electric vehicles are small to non-existent. He said it is impossible for Tesla to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis. He further added that applying open-source philosophy to the patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position. He said that earth will be the benefactor if more companies start making electric vehicles.
