Gargi College Mass Molestation: 17 Arrests So Far, College Panel Records Statements Of 600 Witnesses

The committee which has been instituted by the college, in its preliminary probe-report, has revealed major lapses in security at the fest, further stating that the college had underestimated the number of participants in the fest on the campus.

A fact-finding committee tasked to conduct an independent probe into the alleged molestation of female students of Delhi University's Gargi College has so far recorded and examined the statements of over 600 witnesses, the institute sources said on Wednesday, February 19.

The committee which has been instituted by the college, in its preliminary probe-report, has revealed major lapses in security at the fest, further stating that the college had underestimated the number of participants in the fest on the campus.

It also recommended the immediate sensitization of the college staff to gender issues. However, a final report is still awaited.

"The committee found that the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is grossly biased and compromised and that a new ICC be formed as per UGC requirements by February-end," the college's student body said in a statement.

On Tuesday, February 18, two more men were arrested in connection with the alleged mass-molestation of the students in the all-girls college, taking the number of people detained in the case to 17.

One of the accused arrested was a 22-year-old graduate preparing for competitive exams, while another, aged 19, was working as a tele-caller at a company in Delhi.

The accused were arrested under Sections 452, 354 and 509 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Of them, 10 have been granted bail by Delhi's Saket court.

On February 6, the three-day college fest, Reverie, turned into a nightmare when a mob of middle-aged men gatecrashed the campus and sexually assaulted the female students.

The students had alleged that the drunken men, in their 30s, groped the girls, harassed them while the college security staff and Delhi Police personnel stood as mute spectators.

The students had earlier boycotted classes and organized a massive protest demanding action against the group of men.
