Arvind Kejriwal led AAP Government has cracked down on the private schools who have been charging excess fees. The government has asked 575 private schools in Delhi to refund excess fees with 9% interest, failing which the schools will have to face serious consequences.

This comes after a report furnished by the committee that was constituted by the Delhi High Court for looking into the records of 1,169 private schools with regard to the implementation of the 6th Central Pay Commission recommendations reported PTI.

The schools have been directed to refund the excess fees that have been charged between June 2016 and January 2018 interest.

In an order, the Directorate of Education (DoE) said, “ The committee has identified 575 schools in its report to refund excess fees charged by these schools with 9 percent interest. The schools are directed to refund the fees within 7 days and ensure disbursal of pending payment of salaries if any.”

Education As A Service

The AAP Government has been crusading the movement, “Education should be rendered as a service”, which was reinforced through a number of moves like defining the EWS student category who have been entitled to a 25% seat reservation through the Right To Education Act.

Additionally, the government has also directed closing of two private schools for charging extra fees at the beginning of May 2018 and derecognised a private school in the city for not providing free uniforms and books to students admitted under the EWS category, reported NDTV.

It is to be noted that the Delhi Government has announced various reforms in the educational system by incorporating programmes like that of a spoken English course for government school students, installing CCTV cameras and conducting summer camps among other.

Much like the introduction of the spoken English course, this new directive has also received attention on social media.

The Logical Indian Take

Education is indeed a service which should under no circumstances be converted into a money-making business. The Logical Indian commends the Delhi Government for taking such an initiative.
