In a recent incident, a cop fell prey to ATM fraud, losing a sum of Rs 2.65 lakh, reports The Times of India. The incident happened in Gurugram, Delhi. According to the report, the thieves allegedly cloned the policeman’s ATM card and withdrew an amount of Rs 2.65 lakh from his account. The loot was taking place for a period five months, and Darshan Singh, the cop who became a prey had no clue that he was being robbed for months.
The police informed that the withdrawal took place between September 2017 and January 2018. Darshan Singh found out only in January when he received a withdrawal message on his phone. The ATM card was with him, and he wondered how could that have happened.
Darshan Singh approached bank authorities and found that only a negligible balance remained in his account. The sector 14 police station has registered an FIR under sections 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC against the accused who are yet to be identified.
“Details of all the transactions are still awaited. We can’t go ahead with the probe till we get the exact details. We can procure CCTV footage from the ATMs only after knowing the locations from where the withdrawals were made,” police said to The Times of India.
Not an isolated incident
Similar cases of ATM cloning were reported in various parts of India. In November 2017, a restaurant cashier was arrested in Pune for cloning ATM cards by noting down customers’ ATM pins.
In a similar incident, skimming was found in Connaught Place, Delhi where a man was booked for allegedly cloning credit and debit cards of customers, and using them to withdraw around Rs 6,03,500.
