On Saturday, Rajendra Prasad, the district magistrate of Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, ordered an inquiry into the alleged custodial death of a 48-year-old man, Ramji Mishra, at Gopiganj police station on Friday.

This incident caught the attention of the DGP office and the CM office after a video of the deceased’s daughter, went viral on the social media.

In the video, the elder daughter of Ramji Mishra, identified as Renu Mishra, was seen crying and accusing the policemen of allegedly killing her father by beating him up mercilessly. She also sought help from the government and urged them to take stringent actions against the police officers involved in her father’s death.

On June 29, Ramji Mishra had an argument with his younger brother Ashok Mishra over some property issue. The matter aggravated and the brothers went to the police station, where the policemen allegedly beat them up and put them in the lock-up. Later, Ramji complained of uneasiness and fell unconscious. The policemen took him to the hospital, but the doctors declared Ramji dead on arrival. The family members of the deceased demanded a murder charge should be brought against station officer Sunil Verma, as reported by The Indian Express.

The news of Ramji’s death led to an outrage among the locals. On Friday, the Allahabad-Varanasi Highway was blocked by the furious mob.

However, SP Sachindra Patel denied the allegations of custodial torture. “The two brothers argued over property issue on Friday morning. When the matter aggravated, they came to the Gopiganj police station. But after some time the health condition of the elder brother deteriorated, and he was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. We have started an inquiry and stern action would be taken if anyone is found responsible for the death,” he told The Indian Express.

“We have also come to know that Ramji already had some prior health problems,” SP said. According to the post-mortem report, Ramji Mishra died due to shock and there are no signs of injury on his body.

Reportedly, Sunil Verma has been booked under section 302 (murder) of IPC. SP Sachindra Patel also added that apart from ordering a police inquiry, the station officer of the Gopiganj police station, Sunil Verma, has been removed from office.
