In yet another case of police brutality, two Bengaluru cops, including a sub-inspector have been suspended by police commissioner T Suneel Kumar pending departmental inquiry in connection with the alleged assault on a Bengaluru youth. Almost two weeks after the ill-fated incident, Tanveer is fighting for his life inside the ICU of a hospital as his blood creatinine levels increased drastically. A criminal case has been registered against the cops for allegedly assaulting Mohammed Tanveer, who was on his way to buy medicine for his ailing father on the night of April 9.

What had happened?

Just after midnight, while Tanveer and his friend Danish were on their way to the pharmacy, his mother called and asked him to buy some more medicines. A constable near Lavanya Bakery at M.M. Layout, Bengaluru saw him talking over the phone while riding the bike and stopped them, reported The News Minute.

“The constable, Ayyappa, told Tanveer to cut the call when my mother was telling him the name of the pill he was supposed to buy. Tanveer took a few seconds longer to cut the call and Ayyappa got angry,” said Tanveer’s brother Musaveer. The constable reportedly enraged by Tanveer, started forcefully beating him with a baton, so much so that it broke.

When Tanveer questioned the constable on his behaviour, it led to further arguments. The constable summoned a Hoysala patrol vehicle and took the duo to DJ Halli police station, Bengaluru. A sub-inspector, identified as Santosh was also inside the patrol vehicle who also allegedly physically harassed Tanveer. He was then dragged inside the police station where at least eight constables assaulted him continuously from 1 am to 8 am in the morning.

Musaveer recalled, “Ayyappa banged my brother’s head to the metal rods of the jail door multiple times and spat on him.” Narrating the ordeal, he said that around 9 am, the Inspector of DJ Halli Station Keshava Murthy arrived and it was then that Tanveer’s father approached him. They could come home around 5 pm on April 10 after both of them wrote ‘I will never talk back to the police’ a 1000 times.

Health deteriorated

Tanveer, who was set to get married on May 3, runs a photocopy store near his residence. Soon after returning home, his health started deteriorating and on April 12, his mother noticed blood in his urine. The doctors told that family that Tanveer’s kidneys had been damaged. On April 17, he was shifted to Shifaa Hospital where the doctors informed that his condition is critical.

Musaveer, on April 20 had filed a formal complaint at the police station. ACP Seemanth Kumar Singh said that preliminary police investigation has suggested that it was a case of police brutality. He assured that stringent actions will be taken against other police constables who were associated with the incident.

Police brutality has become all too common in recent times. Just a few months ago, a 21-year-old undertrial prisoner at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru passed away. An autopsy revealed that the death occurred due to assault. The Logical Indian condemns the incident and at the same time, urges authorities to take stringent actions against the perpetrators.
