'Rape Hua Toh Nahi Hai': Uttar Pradesh Cops Refuse To File Woman’s Attempted Rape Complaint
A woman from Sindupur village in the Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh has alleged that the police declined to file her complaint after few men attempted to rape her, on Saturday.
The news comes a day after media reports of 86 rape cases being reported in Unnao from January to November this year along with 185 cases of sexual harassment of women during the same time.
According to the woman, the police asked her to file the case after she would be raped.
Identifying the accused as Ram Milan, Guddu and Ram Babu, the woman claimed that they attempted to rape her a few months. When she went to the police, they told her to file FIR once the incident of rape had taken place. In fact, the woman has been visiting the police station for the past few months but to no avail.
“I was going to take my medicines. They [the three men she has named] stopped me and started pulling my clothes. They also attempted to rape me,” the woman said.
“Kehte hain ki balatkaar karne ka prayaas kiya hai, hua toh nahi hai. Jab balatkaar kar denge phir nyay milega, toh kya hi nyay milega (They say that the men have attempted to rape me, they haven’t raped me yet. If I get justice after rape, what kind of justice would that be?)” she further said.
“After the incident, I called 1090, they asked me to call 100. I called 100. I reported the matter in Unnao, they [the cops] asked me to report it to the area where the incident occurred,” the woman said.
The woman has also alleged that the three accused have been warning her against filing a complaint and threatened to kill her as well.
Meanwhile, when asked for comments, IG SK Bhagat of Unnao, remarked, “No one has come to me, I have been sitting here since morning.”
Unnao is the same district where a woman on her way to testify against her alleged rapists, was set ablaze and later succumbed to her injuries. Unnao is also home to the infamous rape case of 2017 wherein a BJP MLA is one of the main accused and which has led to the death of the victim’s father and her two aunts and critical injuries to the victim and her lawyer so far.
