Pramod Walke, a police constable from Nagpur in Maharashtra was suspended from his duties after a controversial video of the constable surfaced. In the video, Walke can be seen showering currency notes on a group of young schoolgirls who were performing onstage during the Republic Day event at the school.

Not only was a probe ordered after the incident but Walke was refrained from performing his beat duties. According to NDTV, Walke was on duty in the area on that day and had dropped in to watch the school programme at the Zila Parishad School. A group of Class 6 girls were performing on stage to a patriotic song.

Reportedly, the police constable was in an inebriated state. In the video, he can be seen climbing on to the stage, taking cash in hand, circling it around in the air and then showering it on the girls. This incident shocked everyone who were present at the venue. The video of the incident, which was shot by many on their mobile phone cameras, went viral, prompting the parents of the girls to demand action against the policeman for his actions.

Another police officer, Santosh Vairagade, confirmed the case and said that the errant constable has written a letter explaining his behaviour. He defended his actions by stating that he had gone to the spot for crowd control but some people, who were impressed by the girls’ performance, collected cash amongst themselves and requested the constable to give it to the girls on their behalf.

“But after stepping on the stage, the constable’s act was found objectionable, though his body language did not suggest vulgarity,” Vairagade later said. Walke is stationed at the Nand police chawki under Bhiwapur police station and can be seen in the viral videos in uniform.

The incident comes days after the Supreme Court allowed dance bars to reopen in Mumbai and has further stipulated that while the dancers can be tipped, guests are not allowed to shower money on them.

The Logical Indian take

People in uniform, especially the policemen of our country, have an important duty to perform. Those who are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the law and order situation in the country should check their actions before carrying it out, as their actions today sets the precedence for our actions tomorrow. In this case, the authorities were justified in suspending the police constable.

His act not only shows irresponsibility on his part but also reduces the self-worth of the little girls who were dancing to patriotic songs. While his actions might not have been vulgar, the indiscretion still shines through. The Logical Indian condemns an incident like this.
