A police constable saved 400 children from an unexploded artillery shell that was discovered in Chitora village of Sagar district. He ran for 1 km with the 10 kg bomb tucked in his arms to save the children present in a school.

The bomb was found on Friday morning, 25 August, in the backyard of the government school in Chitora which is nearly 170 km from the state capital Bhopal in Sagar district.

As reported by NDTV, a team led by Abhishek Patel, head constable, turned up after the police were informed. There was no bomb disposal squad at hand so the 40-year-old Patel picked up the 12-inch bomb, weighing around 10 kg, set it on his shoulder, and started running.

He said, “We got the information from Dial 100. Since it was a residential area and a school compound, my only aim was to carry the bomb as far away as possible from there,” adding, “We have learnt during our training that had it exploded, it would have damaged 500 meters of the surrounding area.”

The Police department is yet to confirm where the bomb came from. A few days ago, a similar bomb was found in Bannad village in Sagar. The whole matter is under investigation.

A senior officer of the local police said, “There is an army range close to the village. The police will investigate how the bomb reached the village.”

“Police saw the bomb and immediately asked us to close for the day almost two hours early. We asked the students to leave at once,” said a senior teacher, Ajay Kumar to The Times Of India.

Basant Kumar, a student, said that the teachers declared a holiday after being told that there was a bomb on the school premises. After that, media crews arrived within minutes and amid all the commotion the bomb was lying at the same place.

Patel said that he was afraid that the bomb would blow up and decided to take it as far away as possible. The shell is yet to be deactivated.

IG Sagar, Satish Saxena said, “There is an Army shooting range near the village. The Army was informed about the bomb. How it reached there and who placed it near the school is being investigated.” Mr Patel will be rewarded for displaying exemplary courage.

The Logical Indian community salutes the courage of police constable Abhishek Patel for saving innocent lives. He has set an example of bravery for the whole nation by keeping the safety of others over and above his.
