Amid protests from the Jain community, the government on 30 June, cancelled the export of sheep and goats to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The first consignment of 2000 sheep and goats was scheduled to be sent from Nagpur to UAE, last week. However, members of Sakal Jain Samaj, who are against this project, took out a march to the RSS headquarters, seeking their support, as reported by the New Indian Express

The Times of India talked to Dr Vikas Mahatme, who revealed that the Government had decided to hear the plea of the Jains before going ahead with the project. Also, he told that Union Minister Suresh Prabhu asked him to postpone the programme.

Furthermore, it also reported that another consignment of 1,500 ‘Rabari’ goats from Rajasthan being brought to Nagpur, has also been cancelled.

Speaking to The Times of India, the Logistics company’s spokesperson told that he was shocked, but an hour later he retracted and said he had no objection and was being compensated for the loss.

Moreover, he added, “These animals are bred for human consumption only. Whether they are sent from here or elsewhere doesn’t matter.”

Richa Jain, representing the Sakal Jain Samaj, said that Jains voted for BJP because they said they would stop the animal sacrifices but the country is still exporting meat to 60 nations.

Reports suggest that the Jain community plans to approach the Bombay High Court to seek a ban.

However, export of livestock from other parts of Maharashtra to the Gulf countries carries on unabated. As per reports, three flights carrying livestock were sent just last week, including one carrying 1500 animals from Nashik on Sunday.

The Logical Indian Take

Several things are of note in this case. One, how are animal exports in one part of Maharashtra harming the sentiments of people while in other parts of the same state, animals or animal meat is exported regularly. Secondly, based on government data, India does export a significant amount of animals or their meat, then why the selective outrage by the party in power over cows? And last, a consignment scheduled to be sent to a foreign nation was cancelled at the last minute as a form of appeasement to a particular community.
