BSF’s Response

As per The Hindu report, K.K. Sharma, Director-General, Border Security Force (BSF), on 29 November defended the use of jawans as “guides” in and around the Forest Hill Resort, saying “it was nothing new” and “such traditions existed in the Army also”.

Mr. Sharma said, “The incident was blown out of proportion. This is not misuse of manpower. It is an administrative duty to streamline the parking of vehicles.”

He said senior officers including the Director General of Police, Punjab and the corps commander of the Army attended the function.

Mr. Sharma said none of the men who were put on wedding duty had been pulled out from border guarding functions. They were all posted at Chandigarh, the administrative headquarters of the BSF.

The Logical Indian appreciates K.K. Sharma, Director-General, Border Security Force (BSF) to issue an explanation and clarify the occurrence.

Original Report

According to a report by The Indian Express, several BSF personnel were made to perform a different “duty” at the BSF IG’s daughter’s marriage venue. BSF men in uniform were made to guide the guests in and around Nayagaon, along the roads leading to Forest Hill Resort in Chandigarh. Some were also deployed inside the resort. It was BSF IG PS Sandhu’s daughter’s marriage, who is posted in Subsidiary Training Centre, Bengaluru. The marriage was attended by important officials of BSF and Punjab Police.

To perform “marriage duties”, 16 BSF men reached the force’s Lakhnaur campus in Jammu. Apart from BSF personnel, men from Punjab Police, including those patrolling on the highway near Zirakpur were requisitioned for the wedding. A Punjab Police personnel added that 25 of them had come for the “marriage duty”.

SSP Kuldeep Chahal of SAS Nagar said Punjab Police personnel were deployed for official duty since the function was attended by many VIPs.

A BSF jawan said that apart from Jammu, other BSF personnel had also come from places like Bengaluru, Rajasthan and Gujarat for “marriage function duty” as they were told that “BSF Director Generals was also among the guests”. By the evening even a BSF bus was spotted emerging from the resort.

Pradeep Sharma, who claimed to be IG Sandhu’s liaison officer said that deploying BSF personnel at the venue was a part of the “protocol” since BSF DG K K Sharma was among the guests who attended the wedding. “Protocol has to be maintained during the visit of the BSF DG. You can confirm from BSF DG that he attended the function.”

When The Logical Indian got in touch with SAS Nagar SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal, he no personnel from Punjab Police were deployed at the function. He further added that any such information is completely wrong.
