Bihar: Woman Kicked, Slapped & Paraded Naked By Angry Mob Over Suspicion Of Being A Murderer

A frightening video has surfaced on the internet where a woman can be seen getting beaten up by a frenzied mob. The mob even paraded her naked on the streets of Bihar’s Bhojpur district on Monday, August 20, for allegedly committing a murder. The mob also vandalised the area and set a number of roadside stalls, houses and motorcycles ablaze. Till now, fifteen people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to DNA, the incident took place in Bihiya, Ara, Bihar where a woman from a red-light area was forcefully made to walk naked for several metres by the mob, following the death of a boy, Bimlesh Kumar alias Chhotu Sao in the locality. The mob probably attacked the woman as the deceased boy was last seen with her. After the news of the murder spread, some residents from Damodarpur area gathered and started protesting.

Speculations over murder

“On Monday, the dead body of the boy was found on the railway track. While the local police and RPF were indulging in blame games, some family members blamed the red-light area people for the murder. They incited the locals that the boy was killed by those living in the red-light area, following which they burnt some of the houses and made this woman walk naked,” said a police source to the DNA.

The police said that the mob dragged out a woman from one of the buildings, ripped off her clothes and paraded her naked while kicking and slapping her. Even after repeated pleas from the woman the mob did not stop. The irate and frustrated mob also threw stones at a passing train. The police had to fire in the air to disperse the crowd. As per the reports, the villagers also fired back.

The protesters did not even allow the local administration to take the boy’s body for postmortem. They demanded the arrest of the suspects. However, the senior police officials, including the Bhojpur SP, appealed to the protesters to maintain calm and assured action soon. The woman was later taken to the hospital and is still hospitalised. However, the area where the incident happened remains tense, and a large number of policemen have been sent there to keep the situation under control, security has been beefed up in and around Bihiya following the clashes, reported NDTV.

In the video, it was seen that a group of around 200 men were forcefully parading the woman, and also hitting her. Meanwhile, at the time of the incident, the others were filming the act on their cell phones. A few policemen can also be seen running behind them, but it is not clear if and when they were able to rescue her. The police official, IG N H Khan, said that the four policemen, including Bihiya SHO, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

The leader of opposition RJD, Tejashwi Yadav, criticised Bihar Chief Minister for the law and order situation. He tweeted saying, “In Bihar, a woman is allegedly stripped, thrashed and paraded naked by a mob in a lawless state. I’m speechless and numb to see the heart-wrenching videos of that woman. Nitish Ji, with folded hands I request you to fix law and order and ensure women safety and security. Please.”

The Logical Indian take

In the past three months, dozens of people have been brutally beaten to death or heavily thrashed across the country. Men and women, Hindus and Muslims, young and the old, no one was spared from the hands of an angry mob. This shows that there is no fear of law and order among people anymore. The police have made it clear again and again that nobody is allowed to take law into their own hands just because they think the person on the receiving end of the blows has committed a crime. It is illegal in India and a punishable offence.

Please refrain from being part of the mob and be a part of the solution. Inform people that mob lynchings or thrashings are both equally unlawful. In most cases, the perpetrators have been arrested. So, if they do not even care about human rights or the person whom they are lynching, they should not do it at least for their own sake, to keep themselves out of jail. Law and order situation needs to be improved in the country to stop these goons from committing these crimes with such impunity.
