An extremely disturbing trend is emerging in the north Indian state of Bihar wherein rapists make videos of their crime and then upload the heinous videos on social media. Distressingly, these videos then go viral.

In last 45 days, five different rape video clips have surfaced just in the districts under the jurisdiction of the Patna police zone, reported The Telegraph. Inspector-general (Patna zone) Nayyar Hasnain Khan said, “This is a serious matter and police will certainly take stringent action against those involved in circulating the videos.”

Two gang-rapes in Bihar in last seven days

On Sunday, four people were arrested in Bihar for allegedly raping a minor in an abandoned building in Nalanda district. The incident occurred On Friday when a 14-year-old left her house after being scolded by her mother. The girl left her home to go to her aunt house in another village. While the victim was waiting at the bus station, Vikas Kumar and Arvind Kumar Chaudhary the two men, who she already knew approached her. They offered to take her to her aunt’s house on their bike. The minor agreed and accompanied them. Instead of dropping her at her aunt’s house they took her to an abandoned building in Ahiyapur village.

Later, the two another men- Dadan Kumar and Babul Yadav, who were friends with Arvind Kumar also reached the building. The four men then took turns and raped the minor. After threatening the girl to not speak about the incident. As per The Telegraph, the accused recorded the crime on a mobile phone and uploaded it online. The video prompted the police to swing into action.

The girl informed her mother about the incident, following which the FIR got registered in Sarmera police station. The police took immediate action and arrested the four accused. After the medical examination of the victim, the rape got confirmed.

On June 13, another case of gang rape came to light. A group of armed men allegedly gang-raped a doctor’s wife and his 15-year-old daughter. According to the FIR, the doctor was tied to a tree when his wife and daughter were raped in Gaya district. Three people have got arrested and 20 others detained in the case.

The incident occurred when some goons stopped the doctor’s motorcycle near Sondiha village under Konch police station. The men first robbed the family and later on took turns to rape the wife and the minor daughter of the doctor.

After being released by the goon, the doctor made a call from his mobile phone and informed the police. An ambulance with a team of cops reached the spot, and both the victims are taken to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College (ANMMCH) in Gaya, reports The New Indian Express.

“We conducted raids at Sondiha and two nearby villages and have nabbed 20 suspects. The victims identified two of those men, and they confessed to their involvement in the crime,” said the Gaya SSP Rajeev Mishra.

The Logical Indian Take

The fact is, we live in a rape culture. Open any newspaper on any given day and multiple reports of rape or sexual assault pour out. The sheer volume of these incidents points to its acceptance by a major section of our population – as if rape were a systematic problem in our country.

The circulation of videos is growing with the growing number of rape incidents in the country. In many cases, rapists record the crime on their phones and then use the video clips to further blackmail the victims. It is nothing but a publc mockery of the law and order system if the criminals themselves release the videos of their heinous crimes. Surely, the people who saw the videos and forwarded it should also be held accountable in some way for these crimes, including the rape of a minor.

Awareness and education can bring change albeit slowly. We urge the police to take a strict note and action against not only the rapists but also those who forwarded the video.
