A woman of Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, who was allegedly killed by her in-laws over dowry was found alive in Delhi, where she had been residing with another man. Reportedly, the police tracked down the woman using Facebook.

Father lodged the complaint against the husband and his family

According to the Times Of India, the police said that Rubi who is a resident of Safdargunj was married to Rahul in 2016. In June 2018, Ruby’s father Hariprasad went to meet his daughter at her in-laws’ house, however, the family did not allow him to meet Ruby. This invoked the father’s suspicion that they might have torched his daughter over dowry-related issues. First, in June 2018, Hariprasad approached the police for lodging a complaint against Rahul and his family, but after an initial investigation, the police did not find this case strong enough to file an FIR. Later Hariprasad approached the local court for the same which ordered the police to lodge a case in July 2018.

Barabanki Superintendent of Police, V P Srivastava told the daily, “When Rubi’s father approached us and accused his son-in-law of killing his daughter for dowry, we probed the matter, but couldn’t recover her body. But after the FIR was lodged on the court’s order, we again started our probe. After we came to know that her Facebook ID was active, we tracked her Facebook footprint for two months and put her phone on surveillance.”

Cyber cell tracked women through Facebook

Reportedly, the cyber cell of police tracked down her location in Delhi where she was living with a person called Ramu. A police team rushed to Delhi and arrested the two. They have admitted that Ruby faked her death and that her father was unaware of her plans.

The police have lifted the charges against Rahul and his family and booked the father over the charges of misleading the court. According to News18, the SP added, “The girl was traced through Facebook and she accepted that she was the same girl whose name was mentioned in the FIR. She cooperated with the police and told them her story. We will be registering a case against the father under section 182 for misleading the court and the police.”

The Logical Indian take

Although dowry and dowry-related harassment is still a big social problem in India, this case is an example of how the laws which are meant for the safety of women are being misused to harass and trap the innocent people by some women. There are a number of false cases of dowry and domestic violence filed against the husband or his family either to make money or to embarrass them publicly. The legal system needs to work on its loopholes so that the innocents should not become a victim of any injustice.

The anti-dowry law under section 498A was being abused and misused by the wives as a weapon to torture their husbands and their relatives. In July 2017, Supreme court has said that no arrest would be made or coercive action would be taken without ascertaining the veracity of allegations. The court has also directed the setting up of family welfare committees at district levels to examine the authenticity of dowry harassment cases.
