A couple in Bangladesh was shocked and somewhat surprised when the wife delivered twins after 26 days of giving birth to a boy. The wife had two wombs, which in medical terms is called Uterus Didelphys. This incident has drawn the attention of medical practitioners all across the world.

First delivery- 26 days back

According to BBC report, Arifa Sultana (20), the mother gave birth to a boy, and after 26 days she was rushed into the Ad-din Hospital in the Jessore district on March 21 after she complained of stomach pain. Dr Shiela Poddar, who performed the Caesarean said that when the mother was brought in, we found that she was pregnant with twins in a second uterus. The doctors had to perform emergency Caesarean.

Poddar Said, “When the patient came in, we performed an ultrasound on her and found there were twin babies.” She further said that this was the first time she encountered such a situation. She also said that the first baby was born from the first womb whereas the twins were born from the other womb.

Happy to raise children

All three babies are said to be healthy. Mrs Sultana expressed her happiness for having three babies, but also worried about how she would bring them up. Mr Biswas, the father, said that he would try his level best to give his children a better future. Biswas is a labourer in Bangladesh.

What raises an important question is how did the first hospital- Khulna Medical College Hospital where Sultana was taken for her first delivery failed to recognise that the women had a double uterus? Poddar however, clarified the doubt by saying that the family is extremely poor and they never had ultrasound test during their first pregnancy. Both the mother and the twins were discharged on March 25 after keeping in observation for four days.

Not unnatural

One gynaecologist from Singapore,  Dr Christopher Ng, further said that the condition of having two uteruses is not rare. As of now, the first known condition of Uterus Didelphys was noted in 2006 when a British woman gave birth to a triplet from a double uterus. However, the probability of having a double uterus is one in 3000 women. The odds of carrying a baby in each at the same time are around one in five million.
