Assam: Villagers Shame, Beat Couple And Shave Womans Head In Another Case Of Moral Policing

Supported by

In another case of moral policing where people took the law into their own hands, a couple in Nagaon district of Assam was beaten up night-long on Saturday, and the woman’s head was shaved off by the villagers for having an “illicit affair”.

The police have since then arrested eight people in connection with the moral policing case. The Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district, Sankarbrata Rai Medhi, while talking to The Logical Indian said that investigation is still going on and they are trying to identify all those who were a part of that mob.

The eight men have been identified as Atul Baruah, Bhaben Das, Kriti Nath Hazarika, Suren Das, Dip Das, Jadab Baruah, Deben Chandra Das, Krishna Mohan Nath, added the SP.

The couple, who were subjected to brutal torture by the residents of Jhumurmur village was handed over to the police in a critical condition on Sunday morning.

Moral Policing By The Villagers

Reportedly, the incident took place when a man from the neighbouring Tubuki village visited the woman’s home at Jhumurmur village on Saturday night. The villagers not only alleged that they were in an illicit relationship but thrashed them mercilessly when the couple wanted to flee. Additionally, the local women of the village shaved the women’s head as well.

The villagers informed the local police about the incident on Sunday morning when they were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. The villagers alleged that the couple was cheating on their respective spouses, reported News18.

The victims, who suffered night-long torture, are now undergoing treatment at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Civil Hospital at Nagaon and are stable, added the SP. The police began investigating after one of the victims; Baby Barua lodged an FIR on June 24.

This is the third major case in Assam where people took the law into their own hands to render “justice”. Earlier, on June 8 Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath were lynched by an enraged mob upon suspicions of being child kidnappers in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. Again on June 18, a mob had attacked a couple who were travelling on a bike in Pukhurpur village of Rongjuli area in Goalpara district.

The Logical Indian Take

Incidents like these only depict the worsening law and order situation in not just Assam but all over the country where these goons have the audacity to violently enforce their backwards mentality on innocent people.

The Logical Indian is appalled at how moral policing is spreading like a deadly virus in the country whether it is in Assam or other states. It has resulted in torture and even several deaths. We urge the government to take stringent measures to bring justice to the victims and against moral policing in general. We urge the youngsters also to stand against such cowardly practices.
