Amul Sends Legal Notice To Google India For Allowing Fraudulent Websites On Its Platform

India’s one of the biggest dairy brand- Amul has sent a legal notice to the technology giant Google India, claiming that Google has earned revenue by Google Search ad campaigns that are found to be carried out by individuals and organisations in order to “scam individuals in the name of Amul”. The Dairy major has asked Google to “cease and desist” from displaying fake and fraudulent websites. Google spokesperson claimed that they are probing the issue.

Fake Amul websites on Google

According to the NDTV, the legal notice to Google India has been filed on January 10 by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), which owns Amul brand. As per the notice, “A series of fake B2B campaigns regarding Amul parlours and distributors have started through fake websites using Google Search ads since September 2018.”

The notice further said that some miscreants have been running paid ads on Google search engines and using the keywords such as Amul franchisee, Amul parlour, and Amul distributor.

Explaining the modus operandi of these miscreants, the legal notice said that they have found that unknown persons have created fake websites and e-mails in the name of Amul to dupe people.

It said that since March 2018, Amul clients have been receiving numerous complaints alleging that some fake and fraudulent websites are using Amul’s name to con individuals.

It also alleged that many of these fraud websites are also fooling people by issuing fake job letters and forms for getting Amul franchise.

How is Google involved in it?

Amul has also accused Google of taking benefits from Google search engines. In its legal notice, it has alleged that the Google ads platform is allowing these fake websites to use Google’s paid promotion services. Amul alleged that Google without doing any background check of these fake websites is letting them indulge in such illegal activities.

Amul further said that Google should not allow its platform to be used for duping people and from committing illegalities. It has asked Google to “immediately cease and desist” from displaying the search result of such fake/fraudulent websites”.

“Failure to comply with the aforementioned condition within seven days from the receipt of this notice shall constraint our client to escalate this issue using all available means,” it added. Amul has also provided a list of fake websites in its legal notice. Amul has also sent a legal notice to goDaddy.com for letting people misuse their platform for frauds.
