A recent report by the election watchdog, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), revealed that during the Karnataka Assembly polls, that took place in May last year, political parties collected over Rs 356 crore and spent over Rs 170 crore. Among all the political parties, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was on top and collected over Rs 213 crore and spent nearly Rs 139 crore, also the highest. 

The report claims that Modi-led national party BJP in the state had collected Rs 213.47. This collection that was both at the centre and state levels was approximately 60 per cent of the Rs 356.04 crore received by all national and state parties during the assembly elections in the state, reports News Central


Highest collection and expenditure 

As per the report, the BJP was also the top on the list to spend the maximum amount during the election.  The report said that the party spent over Rs 139.04 crore in the state election. Of this amount, a little over Rs 103 crore was spent on publicity and nearly was 18.5 crores was spent on travel. 

The second on the collector list is Congress party, which had received Rs 104.83 crore. According to the report, Congress had spent almost Rs 23.79 crore for publicity. 

The current Karnataka government – Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) came to power in the state after entering into a coalition with the Congress. According to the media reports, all political parties were required to submit details of their expenditure to the Election Commission within 75 days of completion of Assembly Elections. However, JD-S has not made its expenditure public to the  Election Commission. 

The Samajwadi Party spent over Rs 9 crore and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) said that it did not receive any funds, however, it spent Rs 5.1 crore during the elections. As reported by The News Minute, parties spent nearly 70% of their funds on publicity and about 17% on travelling.
