The Forest Department under Delhi government has filed a complaint against the Delhi Golf Club for allegedly cutting trees illegally. According to The Hindu the complaint was filed after an inspection by the forest department at the Golf club premises.

According to News18 reports, the complaint was filed with the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station, by the range officer of the south division of the Forest Department, demanding that an FIR is lodged against the club for cutting down trees illegally. This complaint was based on the inspection report of Forest Department officials who visited the spot thrice last week after an existing member alleged that the club fell over 100 trees without permission from authorities. The inspection by the forest department found 425 logs buried in pits on the premises of the club.

In its complaint, the department has requested the police to further investigate the matter. It also states that more pits need to be dug out to ascertain the exact number of logs. The government has requested for an FIR to be lodged under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994.

Delhi’s Environment Minister Imran Hussain, under the directions of the Cheif Minister, had ordered the department to submit an inspection report on the tree falling in the Delhi Golf Club.

The Delhi Golf Club denied the allegations of wrongdoing in the matter, adding that the case is an attempt to malign its reputation. They released a statement, “The Delhi Golf Club is one of the oldest and reputed institutions residing in the heart of Delhi and has made every possible effort to preserve its natural surroundings and the environment. No action that, in any manner, harms the environment, has been taken by the Club or its governing authorities. We have not seen the copy of the complaint filed with the local authorities as yet. As law abiding citizens of the country, we will take every possible measure to follow the course of the investigation and extend all possible support to the investigating authorities.”
