600 Users Of An Online Shopping Website Duped Of 50 Lakhs, 18 Arrested

As per Gadgets Now report, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force on Sunday busted a gang for stealing the data of about 600 users from a popular online shopping website and cheating them of 50 lakhs.

The gang duped 600 users from 20 cities across the country with the promise of lucky draw competitions. The national security head for the website filed a complaint with Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and hence, the gang was busted. The head of the company said that they received 7,139 grievance mails and out of them 590 complained that they were asked to pay extra money to avail gifts. A cumulative amount of 50 lakh was gathered.

Those arrested were identified as residents of New Delhi.

The UP STF along with the help of Delhi police busted the gang from a call center in Dwarka. The alleged mastermind of the gang, Yogendra Chaudhray, and his brother Sandeep Chaudhary of Mathura are still on the run. The cops seized mobile phones, laptops, and sheets of paper with customer data.

A case has been registered under Section 419/420 of IPC and Section 66 D of IT Act at the cyber police station in Noida. This is the first case to be lodged in the cyber police station since it was inaugurated in March 2016.

How did they do it?

“The customers were convinced because the miscreants provided them the exact description of not only the products ordered but also the time and date of the order,” said Chaturvedi.

The miscreants gathered the data by hacking into the company’s website and giving the exact description of the products ordered by the customers and also the date and time of delivery. They then asked for a sum to be deposited to claim a prize. After the money was deposited the severed all ties. The prize offered was an SUV. When the customers did not get the prize, they mailed their complaints to the company.

Chaturvedi said that another shopping website has also been compromised in the same manner by miscreants.
