According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), an independent think-tank that tracks business and economic data, unemployment that has always been a cause of concern in our country, spiked to 7.1% in the week ended February 25. A consequence of this unemployment crisis can be seen as 2 lakh people applied for 1,137 police vacancies in Mumbai.

Rat race

The recruit of constables in the police force has become a rat race with over two lakh people vying for just 1,137 vacancies this year, reported Mumbai Mirror. That means for every 175 candidates there is one job.

The minimum qualification for the constabulary post is HSC (Std XII) and the recruitment started on April 8. It will go on until May 8 in the Hutatma Maidan in Naigaon. Around 9,000 candidates are undergoing the tests daily at Naigaon, Goregaon police grounds and Ghatkopar.

Among the 2 lakh people who applied for the job, 167 are holders of Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degrees, 423 engineers, 543 are postgraduates like MCom, 28 have BEd degrees, 34 are Masters in Computer Science, 159 are MSC, 25 are Bachelors in Mass Media and Communication, 3 are Bachelors in Ayurveda Medical Sciences (BAMS), 3 are LLBs and around 167 are Bachelors in Business Administration, reported Mumbai Mirror.

“A constable gets quarters to live in, Rs 25,000 salary a month and perks. They can appear for departmental exams for promotions and get into Anti-Terrorism Squad, intelligence and cyber-crime and can rise within five years of joining,” said Arup Patnaik, Former Commissioner of Police. He also said that he has never seen so many people apply for the job of a constable before.

Candidates speak

Avinash Dhumal, 23, who is a BE in automobile engineering and BA from Shivaji University, Solapur said, “I worked with MIDC in Pune as an automobile engineer for a Rs 10,000 salary. But this didn’t meet my needs. Despite being an engineer, the pay scales are low. Private jobs have no perks or stability.”

Sheikh Khwaja Mia, 26 with a BA (English literature) and a diploma in diesel mechanics from ITI, Parbhani said, “I know I will get a job anywhere with my qualifications. I had minimal pay when I was working with MIDC. The experience of working in a company wasn’t encouraging. I also want to serve the country.”
