Netflix has finally put a price tag on one of Hollywood’s most closely watched artificial intelligence deals.
Months after announcing its acquisition of Ben Affleck’s AI startup InterPositive, the streaming giant disclosed in a regulatory filing that it paid approximately US$587 million in cash for the company.
The figure reveals that Netflix is willing to make a substantial investment in production technology at a time when the entertainment industry remains divided over AI’s role in filmmaking.
More Than An Acquisition
When Netflix announced the acquisition in March 2026, it deliberately withheld the purchase price. The latest SEC filing has now confirmed the deal value, ending months of speculation surrounding the transaction.
InterPositive differs from many AI startups chasing fully generative content. Founded by Ben Affleck, the company focuses on developing AI tools designed specifically for film production. According to Netflix, its technology aims to help filmmakers navigate production challenges while preserving the creative judgment that defines storytelling.
The acquisition also deepens Netflix’s relationship with Affleck, whose production company Artists Equity had already entered into a first-look agreement with the streaming platform earlier this year. Affleck has since taken on the role of Senior Adviser, allowing him to contribute to Netflix’s long-term AI strategy.
AI With Human Control
Unlike consumer-facing generative AI models that can create scripts, images or videos from prompts, InterPositive’s technology is intended to support filmmakers during production and post-production rather than replace them.
Netflix has consistently framed the acquisition as an investment in creator tools. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the company’s relationship with the creative community is built on trust and that new technologies should expand creative freedom instead of replacing writers, directors, actors or production crews. Chief Technology and Product Officer Elizabeth Stone echoed that position, stating that innovation should empower storytellers rather than automate creativity.
That messaging is significant given Hollywood’s ongoing debate over artificial intelligence, copyright protection and creative ownership. The entertainment industry has seen growing concern that AI could reduce opportunities for human creators. Netflix’s public positioning suggests it sees commercial value in AI that improves production efficiency while leaving creative decisions in human hands.
Strategic Bet On Production
The disclosed purchase price highlights how strategically important production technology has become for streaming companies.
Rather than investing in another content library or media asset, Netflix has acquired a specialised AI platform that could potentially improve production workflows across films and series. As global streaming platforms continue to compete on both content quality and production efficiency, proprietary technology is increasingly becoming a competitive differentiator.
The deal also reflects Netflix’s broader strategy of integrating technology directly into its creative pipeline instead of relying solely on third-party software providers. By bringing InterPositive in-house, the company gains greater control over how AI tools evolve alongside its production ecosystem.
Hollywood’s Next Chapter
Netflix’s disclosure of the US$587 million acquisition cost offers more than financial transparency. It provides one of the clearest signals yet that the next phase of AI investment in entertainment may centre less on replacing creativity and more on enhancing how films and series are made.
Whether that approach ultimately reshapes Hollywood remains to be seen. The industry’s acceptance of AI will likely depend not only on technological capability but also on whether creators retain ownership of the artistic decisions that audiences value most.
For now, Netflix’s biggest AI investment is not a bet on machines replacing filmmakers. It is a bet that the future of filmmaking will combine human creativity with specialised AI tools designed to make production smarter, faster and more efficient while keeping storytellers firmly in control.
