Nepal’s devastating flash floods have killed 788 people and left 2,502 missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), after an ice-and-rock avalanche and glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered a massive surge of water, mud and debris on August 26.
At least 9,435 people have been rescued, but rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid damaged roads, blocked hydropower tunnels, unstable terrain and renewed rises in the Bhotekoshi River. The disaster has also killed 16 people on the Chinese side, with nearly 550 reported missing in Tibet.
Authorities have urged rescue personnel and residents in affected districts to remain vigilant as the risk of further flooding persists. Meanwhile, Nepal’s security forces, alongside specialised teams from India and China, are continuing operations at hydropower facilities where hundreds of workers remain unaccounted for.
Thousands Still Missing
The scale of the disaster is reflected not only in the rising death toll but also in the thousands of families still waiting for news of their loved ones. According to the Sunday NDRRMA update, 2,502 people remain missing, including residents, security personnel, government officials, foreign nationals and hydropower workers.
A particularly difficult part of the rescue operation is being carried out at hydropower projects, where workers were believed to have been inside tunnels when floodwaters and debris struck. Nepal News reported that 933 hydropower workers were among those listed as missing.
At the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project, rescuers have been using heavy machinery and drilling equipment to reach blocked sections of underground tunnels. The aim is to create an opening through which air can be supplied and rescuers can eventually enter. Families of missing workers have been gathering at government offices and project sites, hoping that their relatives may still be alive.
The Kathmandu Post reported that relatives were pleading for urgent action, with the passage of time adding to their anxiety. The possibility that some trapped workers could still have access to oxygen and water has kept hopes alive, even as rescue teams confront increasingly difficult conditions.
River Rise Raises Fresh Fears
The immediate disaster began on August 26 when an ice-and-rock avalanche and glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border sent a destructive torrent downstream through the Bhotekoshi River system. The flood carried huge amounts of water, mud and debris, destroying homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaging hydropower infrastructure.
The situation became more precarious on Sunday when water levels in the Bhotekoshi River rose again. NDRRMA urged authorities and search-and-rescue personnel in affected districts to remain alert and take precautionary measures.
The renewed rise is particularly concerning because rescuers are already working in areas where access has been severely disrupted. Damaged roads and bridges have made it difficult to move equipment, while unstable slopes and debris have increased the risks faced by emergency personnel.
Radio Nepal reported that 11 hydropower projects in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems were damaged in the floods. Hundreds of workers have been rescued from hydropower tunnels, but searches continue at facilities where people remain unaccounted for.
The disaster has also affected Tibet. Chinese media reports put the death toll on the Chinese side at 16, while nearly 550 people were reported missing. China has deployed rescue personnel and equipment as authorities continue operations in the affected areas.
The Human Cost Of A Himalayan Disaster
Beyond the numbers, the disaster has exposed the vulnerability of communities living along Nepal’s mountainous river corridors. A sudden release of water and debris in a narrow Himalayan valley can travel rapidly downstream, leaving communities with little time to respond.
The concentration of hydropower projects in these areas has added another layer of complexity. While such infrastructure is crucial to Nepal’s energy needs and economy, workers operating inside tunnels face particular dangers during sudden flooding and landslides.
The response has consequently required specialised rescue skills. Nepali Army personnel and other security forces have been working alongside technical teams, while India and China have provided assistance for difficult tunnel-rescue operations.
The situation also highlights the importance of early-warning systems and timely information sharing in the Himalayan region. Rivers and natural hazards do not follow political borders, meaning that a disaster originating in a remote mountain area can affect communities and infrastructure across countries.
As rescue operations continue, authorities face the difficult task of balancing the urgency to reach missing people with the safety of rescuers themselves. Every renewed rise in the river, landslide or unstable tunnel can turn an already dangerous operation into an even greater risk.
