At the time of publishing, India’s medal tally reached 47 at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, comprising five gold, 21 silver and 21 bronze medals. The milestone came after a strong run across athletics and shooting. Parul Chaudhary won bronze in the women’s 5,000m for her second medal of the Games, while Murali Sreeshankar secured silver in the men’s long jump.

Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav added silver and bronze respectively in the men’s javelin throw. In shooting, Neeru Dhanda won gold in the women’s individual trap after earlier helping India secure silver in the team event alongside Manisha Keer and Aashima Ahlawat. Dhanda’s victory also became India’s fifth gold of the Games.

Parul’s Second Bronze

Parul Chaudhary secured bronze in the women’s 5,000m, clocking 15:14.61. It was her second medal at the Games after she had earlier finished third in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. Chaudhary’s latest podium finish added to India’s athletics haul and came after she competed in three finals across three consecutive days.

The 5,000m result was another notable performance for the Indian distance runner, who had already contributed a bronze to India’s medal tally earlier in the competition. Her two medals came in different endurance events, adding to India’s presence in Asian Games athletics.

Sreeshankar’s Silver

Murali Sreeshankar won silver in the men’s long jump with a best effort of 8.07 metres. His competition ended early after he sustained an ankle injury during his fourth attempt, preventing him from taking his final two jumps. Despite that, his earlier effort was enough to secure second place.

His medal formed part of a productive day for Indian athletics, with the country also earning podium finishes in javelin, the 5,000m and other track and field events. Sreeshankar’s silver added to India’s medal count without changing the composition of the 47-medal tally.

Yashvir And Rohit

India achieved a double podium finish in the men’s javelin throw, with Yashvir Singh winning silver and Rohit Yadav taking bronze. Yashvir recorded a personal best of 85.72 metres on his sixth and final attempt, while Rohit produced a throw of 84.35 metres. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won gold.

The result gave India two medals from the same athletics event. Yashvir’s personal best added another milestone to his campaign, while Rohit’s third-place finish completed the Indian double podium. Together, their performances strengthened India’s athletics contribution to the 47-medal tally.

Neeru’s Historic Gold

Neeru Dhanda produced a landmark result in the women’s individual trap, winning gold to become the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in the event. Her victory was India’s fifth gold medal of the Games. Shortly before the individual final, Dhanda had also helped India win silver in the women’s trap team event with Manisha Keer and Aashima Ahlawat.

Dhanda’s achievement gave India its first individual gold at these Games after its previous four gold medals had come in team or doubles events. Her performance therefore stood out not only for adding gold to the tally but also for creating a new milestone in Indian women’s trap shooting.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective –

India’s 47-medal tally reflects contributions from athletes competing in different disciplines, with each podium finish representing years of training, preparation and perseverance. Performances by Chaudhary, Sreeshankar, Yashvir, Rohit and Dhanda, along with the team effort of Keer and Ahlawat, also show the value of supporting athletes across both established and specialised sporting disciplines.

As the Games continue, which of these performances has inspired you the most, and what more can be done to support India’s athletes?
