India’s Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra secured his first Diamond League victory of the 2025 season with a winning throw of 88.16 metres at the Paris Diamond League on Friday, 20 June 2025. Competing at Stade Sébastien Charléty, Chopra outperformed Germany’s Julian Weber (87.88m) and Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio da Silva (86.62m) in a field stacked with world-class talent.

This win marks Chopra’s first Diamond League title in two years and his maiden triumph at the Paris leg. Officials, fans, and fellow athletes have hailed the victory as a significant boost for Indian athletics, while Chopra himself expressed satisfaction with his performance and optimism for the season ahead

Chopra’s Winning Formula: Power, Precision, and Poise

Neeraj Chopra wasted no time in stamping his authority on the competition, launching his javelin 88.16 metres on his very first attempt a distance that ultimately proved unbeatable on the night. He followed up with a solid 85.10m throw, then registered three consecutive fouls as he pushed for even greater distances, before closing with a final attempt of 82.89m.

Despite the fouls, Chopra’s opening mark was enough to keep him ahead of his closest rival, Julian Weber, who had beaten him in their last two meetings. “Today I was really happy with the start because I had a really good run-up technique, and everything was perfect. However, I felt that my body was going too much to the left today. I was trying to go with the javelin with my chest, so my technique was not so good today.

My run-up technique was perfect, and the first throw was really good to start with. I am very happy with 88 metres today and a win after such a long time in a Wanda Diamond League,” Chopra told reporters after the event. Athletics Federation of India officials praised Chopra’s ability to deliver under pressure, calling his win “a proud moment for Indian sport and a testament to his world-class preparation and mindset.”

A Season of Rivalries, Redemption, and Renewed Hope

Chopra’s Paris win comes after a string of closely contested events against Julian Weber, who had bested him at both the Doha Diamond League and the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland earlier this season. In Doha, Chopra broke the 90-metre barrier for the second time in his career with a throw of 90.23m, but Weber’s 91.06m final effort snatched gold.

The Paris Diamond League was also significant as it marked Chopra’s return to the venue where he debuted as a junior world champion in 2017, finishing fifth. Over the past two years, Chopra has consistently finished on the podium but had not claimed a Diamond League victory since Lausanne in 2023.

This latest win not only breaks that streak but also cements his position as a top contender ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Championships and the Paris Olympics. Chopra’s next competitions include the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava on 24 June and the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru on 5 July, where he aims to inspire the next generation of Indian athletes.
