JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar is poised to be sworn in as Bihar’s Chief Minister for the tenth time on November 20, 2025, marking an unprecedented record in the state’s political history. This follows his unanimous election as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) legislative wing after their sweeping victory in the recent Bihar Assembly elections, where the NDA won 202 out of 243 seats.

Kumar formally met Governor Arif Mohammad Khan to stake claim to form the new government, submitting letters of support from all NDA constituents. The oath ceremony, scheduled at the historic Gandhi Maidan in Patna, will be a grand affair with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior NDA leaders expected to attend, highlighting the political significance of the mandate.

Coalition Dynamics

The NDA’s commanding majority is a coalition effort with BJP winning 89 seats, JD(U) 85, LJP (RV) 19, HAM 5, and RLM 4, reflecting a broad-based support across Bihar’s diverse electorate.

BJP’s state president Samrat Choudhary and other leaders voiced collective confidence in Kumar’s leadership, emphasizing continuity and stability for governance and development. Back-channel negotiations over cabinet portfolios are reportedly intensifying, especially around the crucial Home Ministry long held by Nitish Kumar, as well as the Speaker’s position, showcasing the political balancing act within the NDA.

JD(U) insiders indicate retaining most current ministers with new entrants expected to join, including allocations for smaller allies, underscoring a delicate but cooperative power-sharing arrangement.

A Storied Political Journey

Nitish Kumar’s political career spans over four decades, beginning with his involvement in the JP Movement and evolving into a powerful electoral leader known for adept coalition-building and governance. His previous nine terms as Chief Minister have seen shifting alliances, from past collaborations with RJD and Congress to the current stronghold within the NDA, demonstrating flexibility and pragmatic politics.

Despite frequent alliance changes, Kumar has maintained strong voter support, largely credited to his focus on development themes such as social welfare, law and order, education, and infrastructure. Critics, however, caution that repeated realignments may erode public trust, necessitating greater transparency and accountability in the new term.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Nitish Kumar’s historic tenth term signals political endurance but it must be coupled with responsible governance that transcends alliances and prioritizes citizens’ welfare. Bihar’s electorate deserves leadership that embodies empathy, inclusivity, and proactive efforts toward social harmony and sustainable development.

Political stability alone is insufficient if it does not reflect in the everyday lives of its citizens through improved education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. True progress requires constructive dialogue, transparency, and accountability at all levels of power.
