Violence erupted in Nagpur on March 17, 2025, following a protest by Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. Rumours of a holy book being burned during the demonstration triggered clashes between two communities, leading to stone-pelting, arson, and vandalism.

Police imposed curfews under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in several areas, with over 65 individuals detained and 22 police personnel injured. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari appealed for calm, urging citizens not to believe in rumours, while opposition leaders criticised the government for its handling of the situation.

Nagpur Tense Amid Curfew and Clashes

The violence began in Mahal’s Chitnis Park area after Bajrang Dal protesters reportedly burned an effigy of Aurangzeb near the Shivaji Maharaj statue. Tensions escalated rapidly when false reports circulated claiming that a religious text had been desecrated during the protest. This incited anger among members of the Muslim community, leading to violent confrontations between groups.

As clashes spread to Hansapuri and other sensitive areas, mobs engaged in stone-pelting, set vehicles ablaze, vandalised homes, and attacked police officers trying to maintain order. Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal confirmed that curfews have been imposed across sensitive zones to prevent further unrest. Quick Response Teams have been deployed to manage the situation effectively. Union Minister Gadkari reminded residents of Nagpur’s peaceful history and urged them to cooperate with authorities to restore calm.

Background and Political Reactions

This unrest is part of a broader trend of rising tensions surrounding Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Right-wing groups have increasingly vocalised their demands for its removal, viewing it as a symbol of historical grievances. Bajrang Dal leaders denied allegations of burning a holy book, asserting that their actions were symbolic protests against Aurangzeb’s legacy rather than an affront to any religion.

The situation was further inflamed by viral social media posts that spread misinformation and heightened emotions on both sides. Chief Minister Fadnavis condemned the violence but also described Aurangzeb’s legacy as “problematic,” while BJP leader Nitesh Rane drew controversial comparisons to the Babri Masjid demolition. Opposition leaders such as Aaditya Thackeray have been vocal critics of the government’s response, accusing it of failing to prevent communal clashes and calling for accountability.

Community Impact and Local Responses

The violent clashes have left many residents shaken and fearful for their safety. Local businesses have suffered significantly due to the curfew, with many shops remaining shuttered as tensions linger in the air. Community leaders from both sides have expressed concern over the potential for further violence and called for peace talks aimed at addressing grievances and preventing future conflicts.

As families grapple with the aftermath of violence, there is a growing sentiment among citizens that dialogue is essential for healing and rebuilding trust within the community. Many residents are advocating for initiatives that promote interfaith understanding and cooperation, recognising that lasting peace can only be achieved through mutual respect and empathy.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This incident underscores the urgent need for dialogue and mutual respect among communities in Nagpur and beyond. Violence and divisive rhetoric threaten the fabric of our society, which thrives on coexistence and harmony. It is crucial that we move beyond historical grievances and work towards building bridges between communities rather than erecting barriers.

As we reflect on these events, let us prioritise peace-building efforts and constructive conversations that foster empathy among all citizens. How can we collectively ensure that such tensions are resolved without resorting to violence? What steps can we take as a community to promote understanding and coexistence?
