Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the government will recover costs for damages incurred during recent riots in Nagpur, which erupted on March 17 following calls to remove Aurangzeb’s tomb.

A total of 92 individuals have been arrested, including 12 minors, with authorities identifying 104 suspects through CCTV footage. Fadnavis emphasized a strict stance against violence and hinted at potential “bulldozer action” for those involved. The situation is currently under control, with plans to lift curfews in affected areas.

Government’s Firm Response to Nagpur Violence

In a press conference held on March 22, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the recent violence in Nagpur that left many injured and caused significant property damage. He stated that the government would calculate the total cost of damages from the riots and seek to recover these costs from the rioters themselves. “If they do not pay, we will seize their properties,” Fadnavis warned, underscoring the government’s tough approach towards those involved in the unrest.

The riots led to injuries among 33 police personnel who were deployed to restore order. Fadnavis assured that those who attacked law enforcement officials would face stringent legal action. Additionally, he revealed that over 68 inflammatory posts on social media had been flagged and removed by authorities, with individuals responsible for inciting violence also facing charges. The Chief Minister’s remarks reflect a commitment to maintaining law and order in Maharashtra while holding accountable those who disrupt peace.

Context of the Unrest

The unrest in Nagpur was triggered by protests led by right-wing groups demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, which they claimed was a symbol of historical injustice. Tensions escalated when false reports circulated about a religious chadar being burned, leading to violent clashes between groups. Fadnavis acknowledged that while there were indications of a pre-planned attack, it was too early to confirm any connections to external influences or organized groups.

In response to questions about potential intelligence failures, Fadnavis stated that while improvements could be made in intelligence gathering and response, he believed the situation was managed effectively under the circumstances. The government is now focused on restoring normalcy in Nagpur, with plans to lift curfews imposed in affected areas as the situation stabilizes.
