A four-year-old boy was severely burned after his grandmother allegedly poured boiling water on him during Holi celebrations in Nagpur’s Koradi area on March 3, 2026, police said, sparking widespread shock and condemnation. CCTV footage of the incident in Ward No. 2 of Aramshin, where the boy was playfully spraying colour at his grandmother, Sindhu Thackeray, went viral on social media, drawing public outrage.
The child, identified as Om Harish Wange, suffered serious burns on his lower body and is hospitalised with approximately 45 per cent burn injuries, according to medical reports. Nagpur Police have initiated legal proceedings against the woman.
Separate Holi-related violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district injured at least 11 people when a colour dispute escalated into a clash between groups. Officials have confirmed investigations into both incidents, but families of those involved have not publicly commented as of now.
CCTV Shocks Nation, Child Severely Burnt in Nagpur
In a deeply disturbing episode that has jolted social media and local authorities alike, a four-year-old boy was allegedly scalded by his grandmother with boiling hot water as Holi celebrations unfolded in Nagpur’s Koradi locality on March 3.
The incident occurred in the early hours near Aramshin in Ward No. 2, when the young child, identified by police as Om Harish Wange, was playing outside with a spray bottle filled with coloured paint. According to law-enforcement sources, he accidentally sprayed his grandmother, Sindhu Thackeray, who was carrying a bucket of water heated for the festival’s customary use. In apparent anger, Thackeray is alleged to have hurled the boiling water at the child, causing him to shriek and recoil in pain.
The shocking moment was captured on a CCTV camera and later widely shared on social platforms, prompting an immediate public and official response. The footage shows the woman, dressed in a black saree, walking with the bucket of hot water; moments later she bends and tips the water toward the child.
Another woman, believed to be a relative, rushes in with cold water after the initial attack in an attempt to alleviate the child’s suffering, pouring water over the child’s burns. At one point, the grandmother herself also participates in applying cold water, perhaps realising the gravity of her actions.
Sources from the private hospital where Om was admitted said doctors estimate that around 45 per cent of his body particularly below the waist has suffered severe burns. His condition remains critical, with medical staff monitoring him closely as authorities continue the investigation. Nagpur Police have confirmed that the process to register a case against Thackeray has begun, and legal action is anticipated once formalities are completed.
Violence on Holi Not Limited to One Incident
While the Nagpur incident has drawn national attention for its heartbreaking nature, Holi celebrations in other parts of the country have also seen unruly behaviour. In Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, at least 11 people were injured in clashes that erupted when a disagreement over playing with colours turned violent.
According to police quoted in news reports, two rival groups engaged in a verbal dispute which quickly escalated into physical confrontation involving sticks, batons and iron rods, lasting approximately ten minutes before locals intervened to control the chaos. A resident, Avdhesh, told reporters that members of one group had entered his home and assaulted family members when male relatives were absent; he and others were injured while trying to intervene. The police said the situation is now under control and that further investigation is underway.
The convergence of festival euphoria with escalating tempers appears to be a troubling pattern this year, with various localities reporting isolated incidents of aggressive behaviour during Holi. In the Nagpur case, community reactions range from sorrow and disbelief to calls for swift legal accountability, especially considering that the victim is a young child.
Experts, Officials and Community Voices Weigh In
Police officials handling the Nagpur case described the incident as “unusual and deeply disturbing,” emphasising that they are treating the matter with urgency and sensitivity. “We have started the procedure to file a case under relevant sections of the law,” a police spokesperson said. They also indicated that the CCTV footage will play a key role in establishing the facts as the investigation progresses.
Social workers and psychologists observing the case have noted that the incident reflects deeper societal issues around stress, anger control and inter-generational relationships. “Holi is meant to be a celebration of joy and togetherness,” said a local child welfare activist. “Such acts of violence against a child are not just criminal but represent a breakdown in empathy and care that should be nurtured within families.” Independent legal experts have echoed the need for strict prosecution to deter similar behaviour in future.
Community leaders in Koradi have also expressed concern that the victim and his family may need ongoing emotional support beyond immediate medical care a factor often overlooked in the aftermath of such traumatic incidents.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Festivals like Holi are traditionally occasions of joy, colour, renewal and communal harmony moments to set aside daily differences and deepen bonds through laughter and shared experience. Yet the distressing events in Nagpur and Barabanki underscore how quickly celebration can sour when patience, empathy and mutual respect are absent. Violence especially against the most vulnerable, like children should alarm all communities and catalyse deeper reflection about how we understand consent, kindness, and restraint even in festive contexts.
