The World Needs More People Like Him

I was looking for an auto near my office at Sowcarpet to get back home, I got 1 or 2 autos but the drivers were asking for ?100 -110 and on asking them to come on meter, they disagreed which is when I met Mr. Amir, who immediately came to me and said “Main aapko leke jaata hu Sahaab” to which I responded with “meter pe chaloge?” and he said “ji bilkul”
He looked quite old to me, about 70 years old, so I asked him about his age, he said “aap bataiye meri umar kitni hogi” to be humble I said 62-63, then he smiled and said that he was 77 years old. I was shocked.

Here’s the rest of the conversation, (translated into English in brackets)

M: arrey aapki itni umar ho gayi phir bhi aapko kaam karna pad raha hai?
(You’re so old, still you’re working?)
A: aadmi ko jitna ho sake kaam karna chahiye.
(A human must work how much ever he can)
M: aapke bache?
(Your kids?)
A: hai na, 6 bache hai jinme se 2 guzar gaye.
(Yes, I have 6 kids, out of which two of them are no more)

M: acha toh aapke bache aapko saath rehne ke liye nahi bulate?
(So don’t your kids call you to live with them?)
A: bulate toh hai, par main khud ki kamaai pe jeena chahta hu.
(Yes they do, but I want to live an independent life)
M: Bahut achi baat hai, aap kitne saal se auto chala rahe ho?
(That’s very good, since how many years have you been driving auto?)
A: 40 saal se, usse pehle main 20 saal truck drive karta tha
(Since 40 years, before that I used to drive trucks for about 20 years)

M: acha? 60 saalo se aap kaam kar rahe ho? Waah
(You’ve been working for 60 years, amazing)
A: Haan, 17 saal ki umar se maine kaam shuru kar liya.
(Yes, I started working when I was 17 years old)
M: aapke bachon ki shaadi ho gayi?
(All your kids are married?)
A: Haan, bade pyaar aur mehnat se padhaya, likhaya aur shaadi karwayi.
(Yes, with a lot of love and hard work I got them all educated and married)

M: salute sahab, kya main aapka photo kheench ke Facebook pe daal sakta hu? Aapko aur customers milenge, aapke baare me log jaanenge aur bahut kuch seekhenge aapse..
(Salute Sir, can I click a picture of yours and write about you on Facebook? You’ll get more customers and many people will come to know about you and learn from you)

A: nahi main apne kaam se khush hu, aur customers nahi chahiye.
(I’m happy with my work I don’t want more customers)
M: Nahi, aapko log jaanenge toh unko bahut prerana milegi aapse.
(No, if people start knowing you, they’ll get inspiration from you)
A: acha agar logo ka bhala hota hai toh kheench lijiye par mere auto ka registered number mat dijyega, mujhe sympathy ki zarurat nahi hai
(Okay, if people are benefited from this, then you may click, but please don’t give my auto’s registered number, I don’t want sympathy)

I gave him a hundred bucks, thanked him, and shook hands with him.The world needs more people like him; hardworking, independent, selfless, wholehearted, and helpful.
Age is just a number.
