“I was born in a small city named Sriganganagar in Rajasthan. My mother did her best to provide everything I wanted. Her prayer and hard work brought colour in my life and I got selected in IIT JEE.

I started my first semester at IIT Delhi with an SGPA 4.7 out of 10(They would have kicked me out in the first semester itself) with one “E” grade. They screened me through DISCO (Disciplinary Committee) and limited my Credits to 20 for next semester. I was totally depressed and broken. Even during next semester I didn’t perform well, got an SGPA 5.5 (with even more “E” grades, this time, two).

Then happened the life-changer for me, my mother caught serious illness during my first-year summer vacations. We tried hard to pull her out but we failed. I lost my mother on 14 September. I lost the most valuable part of my life. She had always been a great inspiration for me. She worked hard to get me into IIT. She always wanted me to achieve great heights. Sacrificed her needs to fulfil mine. Her last wish was to see me successful.

With the damaged heart and mind, I came back to IIT. This time even more broken and depressed. This incident gave me one month of sleepless nights. One night, while sitting in the room alone, I did introspection. I thought, “What was supposed to happen, has already happened. Had I ever realised that she had made a last wish to me? What about that?”

From that time, I started working hard day and night. Gradually, I started increasing my SGPA. And believe me, that worked. My 10th Semester ended with an SGPA of 9.8 and the CGPA stood 7.1.

Seems like a nice story but it’s a reality. During that time, there were lots of people who tried to pull me back. But I always looked at the quote on my wall from the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness” –

“Don’t ever let somebody tell you, you can’t do something
Not even me, alright?
You got a dream, you gotta protect it
People can’t do something themselves
They wanna tell you that you can’t do it
You want something, go get it. Period”

Guys, Work Hard. If you can’t do it for yourself, then do it for your parents who worked hard for all of you.
PS: 14th September is my mother’s Death Anniversary. Right now, I am in the United States and working hard to fulfil her dreams. Even now, when I am in challenging condition, I compare my situation with challenges my mother faced while raising me. I feel mine is not 1% of her’s.
