My Story: My Friends Ditched Me For A Month Long Leh-Ladakh Trip And That Is Best Thing They Did

Supported by

“I started travelling out of boredom, out of monotony and lack of zest. But it was not until the time when my friends ditched me for a month long Leh-Ladakh trip that I embarked upon my first solo trip. So, I started without a plan, without any apprehensions and any anxiety because it happened so suddenly that I didn’t have time to think. Thus, started my wanderlust.

I faced many problems, stares from men to the point of ogling, uncomfortable train rides, starving without food, bitten by a monkey. People trying to be extra helpful and aunties imagining my lack of character. But that’s just the bad part, wait till you hear the good ones.

Strangers offering their berths in train, families sharing their food, taxi drivers going the extra mile to make sure I reach safely. Doctors opening their dispensaries on Sunday to give a tetanus shot and people carrying my backpack on treks.

Once I was travelling back from Lansdowne alone and missed my connecting bus. It was 7.30 pm and I was in Najibabad, where I couldn’t get any bus and few men started circling around. I was almost on the verge of crying when a man approached me and guided me to the right bus and even dropped me to Bijnor and waited with me for 2 hours till I got my bus for Delhi. I kept doubting his intentions throughout. It’s only when I reached home safely that I realized that there are people who help others without expecting anything in return.

Imagine a classroom which teaches you to live, a lecture on how to be more humane. Travel is that classroom, that lecture! Every road, every turn, every human I meet – all an experience that makes me better than who I was, a kilometer behind.”
