My Story: I Lost My Leg In An Accident & It Took Me Seven Months To Get Prosthetic

“Life was perfect. I had a loving family, great friends, an amazing boyfriend, and a killer grade card in college. My life had everything going right. Until March 3rd, 2014, it read like a page out of a fairytale. All I did was decide to go for a ride.

My boyfriend and I rode out. We stopped to eat food, giggled at each other’s jokes, gossiped about mutual friends and acquaintances, and just soaked in the time we were getting with each other. Just as we were getting ready to leave, it began to rain. Soon after, the bike broke down. It was almost as if fate was conspiring to give us more time together! Who was complaining? Late in the evening, our bike hit an oncoming vehicle, and the next thing I knew, my leg had gotten detached and was lying far away. Blood was spurting everywhere. In the hurry to get me to a hospital, my leg had been left behind. By the time people went back, vehicles had run over it and it couldn’t be reattached. I was scared. How would I face my parents? What would I tell people? No one knew of my boyfriend. Now what? How would I face society as a girl?

It took seven months to get my prosthetics. A year after the accident, my relationship ended. All through this, I had to get used to the words ‘amputee’ and the tags that everyone now saw me as – ‘specially abled’. It was then that I picked up my dancing shoes. Life was never going to be the same, but who said it couldn’t be better? Today, I am well on the path to making my life better.”
