My Story: I Shared My Feelings With My Parents And Fortunately They Stood Beside Me

“In my graduation I did Law, I took up this stream because I felt I have that zeal in me to see myself as a lawyer. I successfully graduated making my parents proud & also landed a fine job as a legal associate. Few months into my job I started questioning my plans for the future. The current job was comfortable but soon I realized I didn’t see a future for me in it. It was during the same time that I got through Queen Mary University in London for pursing my LLM, while my parents were over the moon upon hearing this news, I didn’t feel the same emotion.

I started feeling lost & depressed when I came to this realization that I was no longer happy in what I was doing and I had simply invested my 5 years and also my parents’ hard earned money into studying law.

With a help of a dear friend, after a lot of soul searching I came to the conclusion that all I wanted to do was to become a successful hotelier someday. Sooner I realized that my true passion was in hospitality industry. but then it dawned on me that I didn’t have the courage to tell to my parents about this, as I felt I would be letting them down, because I started thinking to myself that I had wasted my 5 years into studying law and then other 2 years into working, which could make my parents think my decision to switch to hospitality was completely irrational. I thought that they would not understand my decision and would simply question it, answer for which I myself didn’t have at that time.

Finally I gathered my strength and with all my might I confessed to my mother, who is my best friend that I wanted to switch to hospitality. You should know, I was expecting my mother would go hysterical as I was rejecting my Queen Marry offer as well and going to hospitality would have meant, my 7 years of law becoming completely irrelevant. But to my much relief, my mother smiled and all she asked me was “Is this what you want to do for rest of your life?” I said yes. There was no looking back from there, my parents including my younger brother went full swing in helping me with my college applications. Soon arrived the happy news, I had got admission to the top ranking university of hospitality in Switzerland. My parents were ecstatic.

This incident made me realized that, it is never too late to do what you love, all you need is a little bit of courage. With the little element of courage I had opened up to my parents, if I had not, then I would have continued suffering in a field I no more liked. Our parents are the biggest support system we have and we should not take it for granted even for a second. Also it is important for every parent to hear out their child’s thoughts & ideas. My parents helped me to take the first step to my new future. When I asked them one day, what will happen if I fail, what will I do then, to that they answered “ Doing what you love, with passion & determination only leads to the road of success”.

P.S. Doing the right thing may not be always easy but give it a try, trust me it will be worth it.”
