My Story: ‘I Have Never Let My Disability Define Me Or Hold Me Back’

Chaitanya Mukund lives with cerebral palsy, yet he has made a remarkable mark in the fashion industry. He debuted as a model in 2018 at an event recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for featuring the most designers presenting in a single fashion show.

When I turned one, my world shifted in ways I couldn’t yet understand. My family discovered that I had cerebral palsy and dyslexia. Instead of seeking a special school, they made a brave choice: they wanted me to experience life as normally as possible. They believed in me, and that belief became my anchor.

But school wasn’t easy. I felt the weight of my struggles with dyslexia and slow handwriting every day. My classmates often kept their notebooks close, as if sharing them would somehow diminish their own success. I remember the sting of isolation, but thankfully, my teachers and principal stepped in. They were my allies, always finding ways to support me, nurturing my spirit when I felt lost.

After school, I landed a job at one of the most prestigious BPO companies. It felt like a dream come true at first, but soon the long hours and relentless night shifts took their toll. Chronic back pain became my unwelcome companion, and I faced humiliation that chipped away at my self-esteem. It was a harsh reality that made me question everything.

Then came 2017—a year that changed everything for me. With a leap of faith, I decided to restart my career as a freelance writer. It was terrifying but exhilarating. I poured my thoughts onto the page, creating content that felt true to who I was.

In 2018, I took another bold step and made my debut as a model with a disability at a fashion event that set a Guinness World Record for the most designers presenting in a single continuous show. Standing there on that stage, surrounded by creativity and acceptance, I felt invincible. For the first time in my life, I truly believed that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.

The following year marked another milestone: I published my first book, Shivay: The Wonder Boy. This wasn’t just any story; it introduced India’s first superhero of its kind—a blend of mythology, fiction, and reality that reflected my journey. Every page was infused with my heart and soul.

In 2021, I was honoured to be named one of the top 25 persons with disabilities from across India for the NCPEDP-Javed Abidi Fellowship on Disability. This recognition felt like validation—not just for me but for everyone who has ever faced challenges due to their circumstances.

I’ve learned not to let my disability define me or hold me back. Deep down, I believe everyone has the power to write their own destiny through hard work and unwavering faith in themselves.

My family and friends have been my biggest cheerleaders throughout this journey. Their encouragement has been invaluable, helping me grow beyond what I thought possible. With their support, I know I can continue to break through barriers society tries to impose on me.

As I write this chapter of my life, I feel an exhilarating sense of possibility ahead. I’m excited about translating Shivay into English so it can reach an even wider audience—and who knows? A sequel might just be on the horizon! Whatever challenges come next, I’ve learned that I am limitless. With determination and perseverance as my guides, I’m ready to face whatever lies ahead.
