My Story: I Asked Her “What If I Fail?” She Said “I Know You Love Us And You Won’t Let Us Down”

“Neither Salama or I have full time jobs, we don’t get that beautiful sms at the end of the month that says our salary has been deposited. Salama is an entrepreneur with a small jewellery business, and I am writer and presenter where 80% of my work is freelance.

I have big dreams for my career, she has big dreams for her business, and we are both extremely passionate about our work. We pretty much live day to day, Salama’s business is only one-year-old, she is taking a break from university to focus on it full-time, and I have been writing, presenting, and consulting for the past 6 months.

We were asked what allowed us to take those risks in our lives? The simple answer is we told each other the very same words the day before we got started, and those words were “Go for it. If you know it’s what you want go for it”. You have no idea how impactful those words can be when they come from the people closest to you.

Salama started her business with 500 dirhams and an Instagram account. She designed two pieces and was scared to make them public in case nobody would buy them. I simply told her to go for it, she loved the business and love designing jewellery, so I knew it is  what she wanted, but all she needed was that push.

Just six months ago I had an opportunity but I needed to quit my job and take an unpaid opportunity to present on TV. We had bills to pay and two young boys to take care of. She knew it was what I wanted and simply said “Got for it, it’s what you have always wanted to do, I am here for you.”

Then I asked her “What if I fail? What if I can’t make money?”. She said “Khalid when you want something bad enough you will work harder than you ever did to make it happen, I know you love us and you won’t let us down”.

Having each other to push forward has made us do the things we have always dreamed of but were always to scared to take the chance, that is something we are grateful for every day of our lives, that is one of the things we love about each other the most, because we know that when we are old and gray that we will have lived to our full potential because we had each other.”
