My Story: ‘After Years Of Suffering, I Realised That I Can Be Much More Than My Looks’

At just six years old, Anmol Arora discovered a white patch on her eyelid, igniting panic at home and marking the beginning of her journey with vitiligo, a condition that limited her friendships and self-acceptance.

I was born and raised in the bustling heart of Delhi, where I spent my childhood navigating the complexities of life. At just six years old, I noticed a peculiar white patch on my eyelid. Panic erupted in my home as my parents rushed me to the doctor. After what felt like endless examinations, the diagnosis was clear: I had Vitiligo. At that tender age, I struggled to grasp the implications of this condition, but the stark contrast on my skin was impossible to ignore.

Vitiligo is a disorder where your immune system turns against you, leading to unpredictable patches of skin losing their pigment. The treatments varied widely; some worked for others, but for me, they were largely ineffective. Despite this, my parents never lost hope. They sought out every possible treatment, believing that one day I would wake up free from those white patches. Yet, as the days turned into months and then years, the patches continued to spread.

My childhood was fraught with challenges due to Vitiligo. In school, I found myself isolated; classmates would make hurtful remarks about my appearance that cut deep. I often sat alone during lunch, feeling like an outsider in a world that seemed to value looks above all else. The longing to perform—to sing, dance, and act—was stifled by a harsh reality: teachers often chose only those who fit a certain image for school performances.

A Turning Point: Acceptance and Growth

It wasn’t until after I completed my tenth grade that a shift occurred within me. I began to understand that I could be more than just my appearance. With newfound determination, I focused on my studies and achieved commendable grades in my twelfth examination. This academic success opened doors for me at a college in Delhi, where I discovered a vibrant community that encouraged self-expression.

Participating in debates and various events helped me build confidence and connect with people from all walks of life. I realised then that the world is far more expansive than mere appearances. I started writing poetry and took up guitar classes, pouring my heart into performances on stage. Each step forward became a testament to my resilience, allowing me to leave behind the hurtful comments from my school days.

Finding My Voice

Social media became my canvas for creativity; I began sharing my poetry and other artistic endeavours online. To my surprise, this led to an opportunity for a modelling assignment with a reputable production company. It struck me then how Vitiligo had seldom been represented in mainstream art—yet here I was, breaking barriers and redefining beauty.

Today, I stand proudly as an artist, exploring avenues in acting and modelling that once felt out of reach. My faith has been a guiding light throughout this journey, instilling a sense of positivity that has carried me through even the darkest times. Looking back, every challenge I’ve faced has shaped me into who I am today.
