“On this cold windy morning, I was at the Allahabad railway station looking for an auto to go to my home at park road Darbhanga Colony. While waiting, I saw a rickshaw puller Mr Sahani who offered me a decent fare for the purpose. I agreed, and we started moving. Later I realised and noticed that this man did not have his left hand. With anxiety and surprise, I asked, “You don’t have your left arm”. He was equally surprised and asked how I knew when he didn’t mention it. I told him that I noticed it. He laughed, kept his head down in the foggy morning and said, “Babu, I have lost many customers by telling them this in the beginning. People don’t trust your inner strength, but, rather go by your appearance”.
I asked if it was difficult for him since he also looked quite old. He said that it was and that the first reaction of people is ‘arey bhaiyya, tum jao tumse nahi ho payega’ (You leave it please. You won’t be able to do the work). He told me, “When people say things like this, it is the only time I feel disabled. It’s hard to convince them to trust me that I will take them to their destination safely.”
Mr Sahani left me at my home safely. While leaving, he said, “Babu the only disability is our negative and bad way of seeing things”.
I nodded in agreement. I see Mr Sahani as a real hero and a source of inspiration for those who feel disheartened about their condition and disability.”
