My Story: I Spend Very Little Time With My Dad. That’s Something Which Hurts You More As You Grow Up

“My father serves in the Indian Army. This meant that I was constantly on the move around the country. Until today, I’ve lived in around 15 places in India.”

Tell me a unique incident from your past
“Most of my experiences have been unique given that I was constantly changing schools and meeting new people. While this meant not having long-term friendships, it helped me become more adaptable.  Interacting with people from so many walks of life and cultures helped me learn a lot about our country – and people in general.”

What’s it like being the son of a soldier?
“I’ll be honest: it’s difficult. Some people may think it’s cool; they ask me, “Does your dad have a gun?” or “Have you ever shot a bullet?” Truth is, I spend very little time with my dad. That’s something which you don’t realize as a child; but as you grow up you begin missing him. Be it during the PTMs, sports practices, school events or my birthdays, my dad made his presence felt simply by his absence. And it’s been difficult to deal with. It may sound clichéd, but what a soldier’s son desires most in life is simply more time to spend with his father.”

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
“Yes. I’m proud of my dad.”
