“I returned from Hyderabad from a competition. It was 2 AM when I booked a sharing cab near Corporation Circle, Bengaluru. It was only when my cab reached that I realised that I’d forgotten my luggage in the bus. It was very embarrassing; and since half-an-hour had passed since the bus left, there was very little chance that I would recover my bag.
I started the normal drill by calling the bus company and asked them for driver’s number. I called him up; he was already some 25km away from where I was and was in no mood to wait. The biggest problem was that he knew only Telugu and I know Hindi. In the meantime my cab arrived to pick me up. Since it was Sharing cab, the driver was to go to the final drop-point which I had already entered as my college.
I spoke to the cab driver explaining to him the situation, adding that I will cancel cab and book a new cab. To my surprise he asked me to sit inside and said, ‘Let’s catch that bus first.’ It was like God sent an angel at 2 AM. He knew Telugu and hence was doing all of the talking with the bus driver over the phone. After some 30 km of fast driving, we found the bus. I recovered my luggage and then we traveled to my college’s hostel which was 50km away.
This man not only dropped me at my hostel: he also did not demand anything extra for the distance covered catching up with the bus. He recounted how he himself had once lost a bag with some valuables in a similar incident in the past. He emphathised with me and did not charge me more than the cost of travel between Corporation Circle and my hostel. He taught me the value of gratitude and empathy, and for that I am eternally grateful.”
