My Story: A Lot Of People Are Faced With This Same Issue And They Choose To Keep Mum Which Affects Their Life

“From a young age; I have been tagged with a lot of labels related to my body being too thin by some of my own friends, relatives. We live in a society where we are constantly flailed by the judgments made by others. So basically if I am petite; people would call me a “toothpick”, if I am chubby; people would joke about my eating habits.

Growing up, I realized society will never be happy no matter what which led me to the idea of this short film. One of the incidences I recall is when I was in a town for a social event with my sister, Avanti Devdikar. That day when we came home, we came across the fact that we had both been body shamed openly by our own acquaintances; stating that I look dull, pale and “malnourished” (yes they actually said that!) whereas my sister was called fat and that she should give me some of her food.

We were frustrated but concealed it all with a meek smile. A lot of people are faced with this same issue and they choose to keep mum which affects their health and overall development which also has led to anxiety and depression.

After hearing a lot of stories; I decided to make a short film with the help of my friends. Together this is an attempt to end body shaming once and for all.”

This is why the hashtag ‘Itstartswithyou‘.
