A 40-year-old female English teacher from a prominent Mumbai school has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old male student over more than a year, with the help of an accomplice.

The teacher, who is married with children, groomed the Class 11 student through extracurricular activities, isolating and manipulating him, and is accused of providing alcohol and anti-anxiety pills before taking him to five-star hotels for repeated assaults.

Both the teacher and her friend face charges under the POCSO Act and Indian Penal Code, and police are probing for further victims as the teacher remains in judicial custody.

Grooming, Manipulation, and Abuse of Trust

Police investigations reveal the teacher began grooming the student in December 2023, using her authority and school activities—particularly dance groups—to gain his trust and isolate him from peers. She escalated the abuse by taking him to luxury hotels and secluded locations in her car, supplying him with alcohol and prescription anti-anxiety or antidepressant medication without medical supervision.

The teacher’s female friend, a former educator now believed to be in London, played a key role in persuading the boy to maintain the relationship, telling him such affairs were “quite common”. The car used for these acts has been seized, and digital evidence is under review5.

The case surfaced after the boy’s parents noticed behavioural changes and, after his board exams, encouraged him to confide in them. The teacher had resigned in April 2024 after school management raised concerns, but continued pursuing the victim. Both the teacher and her accomplice have been named in the FIR; the teacher is in judicial custody until July 16, while police are seeking a lookout circular for her friend, who is absconding overseas.

A psychiatric evaluation found the accused teacher to be of sound mind, and her communications with other students are being reviewed for possible further victims. The school has suspended the teacher and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This deeply troubling case exposes the urgent need for robust safeguards and vigilance in educational institutions. Abuse of authority, especially by those entrusted with children’s welfare, is a grave violation that demands zero tolerance and systemic reform.

At The Logical Indian, we stand with survivors and their families, and call for stronger mechanisms for prevention, early detection, and support.
