Mumbai’s wholesale tabela milk price is set to cross ₹100 per litre from September 1, with the Mumbai Milk Producers Association raising the rate by ₹9 to ₹102 per litre.
The revised price will replace the existing ₹93 rate and remain in force until February 28, 2027. The increase applies to milk supplied by local producers and is not a blanket revision of prices for every packaged milk brand sold in the city.
New Rate Starts September 1
The Mumbai Milk Producers Association announced the wholesale price increase ahead of the festive season. The association’s president, Chandra Kumar Singh, said the decision was driven by higher costs faced by dairy operators. The new rate represents a rise of about 9.7% from the existing ₹93 per litre.
The change concerns the wholesale rate for local milk supplies. It should therefore not be interpreted as a citywide increase to ₹102 for all forms of milk. Packaged milk sold by organised dairies can continue to carry separate prices based on the brand, product and distribution channel.
Producers Cite Higher Costs
The association has attributed the increase primarily to rising costs of dairy-animal maintenance and cattle feed.
According to the association, prices of several feed ingredients, including grains, tur chuni and chana chuni, have risen by as much as 25%. It has also pointed to higher costs for oil cakes and other inputs used in dairy operations.
The ₹9 revision is therefore being presented by producers as a response to higher milk-production costs rather than a change in government-administered pricing.
The association’s members reportedly agreed to the increase unanimously.
Retail Prices May Also Rise
The wholesale increase could feed into retail prices for tabela milk as vendors and dairy operators adjust their rates.
Some reports have put the potential retail price at around ₹110 per litre, compared with roughly ₹100 currently. However, ₹110 is an expected retail price rather than the officially announced wholesale rate, and the actual price paid by consumers can vary between suppliers.
The distinction is important because Mumbai has multiple milk-supply channels. The latest announcement specifically concerns the wholesale rate set by the producers’ association and does not establish a new retail price for every milk product available in the city.
India Milk Output Keeps Rising
The Mumbai price increase comes against a broader backdrop of rising milk production in India.
According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying’s Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025, India’s milk production increased from 239.30 million tonnes in FY2023-24 to 247.87 million tonnes in FY2024-25, a growth of 3.58%. Per-capita availability also increased to 485 grams a day in FY2024-25.
Maharashtra accounted for 6.71% of India’s milk production in FY2024-25, placing it among the country’s five largest milk-producing states.
The national production numbers, however, do not determine the wholesale price of milk in an individual market. Local procurement conditions and the cost of feed, fodder, livestock maintenance and transportation can influence prices faced by producers.
What Mumbai Consumers Should Know
For consumers buying tabela or locally supplied milk, the immediate change is clear: the wholesale benchmark will move from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre from September 1.
The eventual retail impact will depend on how vendors and suppliers pass on the higher wholesale cost. There is currently no basis to say that every milk brand or packaged product in Mumbai will rise by ₹9.
The revised wholesale rate is scheduled to remain in place until February 28, 2027, giving consumers and dairy businesses a defined pricing window for the coming six months.
