On Thursday, 5 February 2026, the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested 26-year-old Yogendra Vanshraj Bauddha for an alleged violent stone-pelting attack that left a commuter permanently blinded in one eye.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night on a Churchgate-bound fast local train when a trivial dispute over seats broke out between Bauddha and another passenger.
After alighting at Bandra station, the accused reportedly jumped onto the tracks and hurled a heavy stone back into the compartment, which missed its intended target and struck 28-year-old Nishant Khatri instead.
Khatri, a finance professional who had celebrated his engagement just two days prior, suffered severe retinal damage and has been told by doctors that he will never regain vision in his left eye.
Mumbai Local Train
Mumbai’s lifeline, the local train network, often witnesses high tensions due to extreme overcrowding and the daily struggle for space. This tragic incident follows a series of recent violent outbursts on the suburban line, including a fatal stabbing of a college professor in Malad just weeks earlier.
Such events highlight a growing concern over the safety of commuters and the volatility of tempers during peak travel hours. Nishant Khatri, an MBA graduate and the sole breadwinner for his family, was simply returning home from his office in Sakinaka when he was caught in the crossfire of someone else’s argument.
The victim has alleged that he was made to wait nearly 45 minutes for procedural formalities at the station before receiving medical aid, though Western Railway officials denied this, stating he was moved to Bhabha Hospital within 15 minutes.
Swift Police Action
The Bandra GRP tracked the suspect using a combination of CCTV footage and facial recognition technology, tracing his movements from Bandra to Dadar.
Senior Inspector Shahaji Nikam confirmed that Bauddha, a labourer from Uttar Pradesh residing in Vasai, has been arrested from Dadar railway station and charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons.
Officials have also used this incident to reiterate their request for CCTV cameras inside local train compartments to prevent such escalations in the future.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we are deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence that has permanently altered the life of a young man on the brink of a new chapter. No dispute over a seat or a momentary inconvenience justifies the choice to pick up a stone and cause lifelong harm.
Our daily commutes should be defined by mutual tolerance and shared patience, not by aggression that turns innocent bystanders into victims of misplaced rage. This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for better mental health awareness and conflict de-escalation in our high-pressure urban environments.
