Mumbai: Fire Breaks Out in Mira Road Pleasant Park Area, Cylinder Blasts Reported

A late-night fire in Mira Road rapidly spread from a makeshift godown to nearby homes, triggering explosions and panic among residents.

A major fire erupted at a makeshift godown near Pleasant Park in Mira Road (East) on Tuesday night, March 24, 2026, around 9:00 PM. The blaze, fueled by plastic and cloth materials, rapidly spread to adjacent residential buildings, reaching up to the fourth floor and damaging balconies.

Residents reported multiple gas cylinder explosions that intensified the inferno and damaged nearby parked vehicles. While no casualties have been officially confirmed, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) fire brigade deployed multiple tankers to contain the fire, which caused significant financial losses and forced residents to evacuate their homes in panic.

Cylinder Blasts and Escalating Chaos

The fire reportedly started in a warehouse structure constructed of tin sheets and bamboo on an open plot. The intensity of the heat caused several LPG cylinders to explode, a sound that eyewitnesses say “triggered instant terror” throughout the locality.

“We heard three to four loud blasts, and suddenly the smoke turned pitch black. We didn’t wait for instructions; we just grabbed our essentials and ran,” shared a local resident. Fire officials confirmed that the presence of highly combustible materials made the firefighting operation particularly challenging.

Sandeep Rane of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) visited the site and alleged that many such commercial establishments in the area operate without a valid Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) or official permissions.

A Growing Pattern of Safety Concerns

This incident is not an isolated one for the Mira Road-Bhayandar region, which has seen a string of similar fires in recent years. In late 2025, a furniture godown in the same Pleasant Park vicinity was gutted, and in early 2024, a massive blaze in the nearby Azad Nagar slums claimed a life.

Local activists point toward the proliferation of illegal scrap yards and warehouses in densely populated residential zones as a ticking time bomb. MBMC Chief Fire Officer Prakash Borade stated that while the immediate priority was containment and cooling operations, a thorough investigation into the cause suspected to be a short circuit and the legality of the structure is underway.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that every citizen has the right to a safe living environment, free from the shadow of preventable disasters. While we commend the bravery of the fire brigade personnel who worked through the night, this incident highlights a recurring and dangerous lapse in urban planning and safety enforcement.

The presence of high-risk godowns amidst residential clusters is a violation of the basic principles of harmony and coexistence. We urge the authorities to move beyond temporary “cooling operations” and implement a strict, transparent audit of fire safety norms across all commercial hubs. It is time to prioritise human lives over administrative apathy and illegal encroachments.
