A 46-year-old man, Gudda Patel, was arrested on Thursday in Samanna village of Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district for the gruesome murder of a 16-year-old boy, Bharat Vishwakarma. Patel, who had been released from jail only weeks prior after serving a sentence for his wife’s murder, allegedly attacked the teenager with an iron rod and a hammer. Eyewitnesses and local villagers reported that the accused was caught attempting to eat the victim’s flesh and drink his blood, a claim confirmed by the City Superintendent of Police (CSP) H.R. Pandey.
Following the attack, Patel reportedly fled into nearby fields, threatened bystanders, and engaged in a stone-pelting confrontation with both villagers and police. A tense standoff ensued, lasting about an hour, before law enforcement was finally able to apprehend him. Authorities are investigating the exact motive and reviewing the accused’s mental state, while the cannibalism-style acts are based on eyewitness accounts that are still under official verification.
A Nightmarish Scene in Samanna Village
The victim, a resident of nearby Arthkheda village, had travelled to Samanna to spend time with his sister. The tragedy unfolded while the teenager was returning home on his motorcycle. Without provocation, Gudda Patel allegedly ambushed him, first striking him with an iron rod and then repeatedly with an iron hammer. The sheer brutality of the assault left the boy dead on the spot.
Local residents, alerted by the teenager’s desperate screams, rushed toward the scene. According to CSP H.R. Pandey, the sight that met them was horrifying. “When the villagers reached the spot, they found Patel eating flesh from the boy’s head and drinking blood from his hands,” he stated. The accused did not immediately surrender and brandished his hammer to keep the witnesses at bay.
Patel then fled into a nearby agricultural field, leading to a frantic chase where villagers attempted to subdue him by pelting stones. It took a coordinated effort by the police to surround the field and finally arrest him after about an hour. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, including verifying the eyewitness accounts of Patel’s shocking behavior and assessing his mental state.
A History of Violence and a Failure of Reform
The background of the accused, Gudda Patel, suggests a deeply disturbed individual with a documented history of extreme violence. This was not his first encounter with the law for a capital offence. Years ago, Patel had been arrested and subsequently convicted for the brutal murder of his wife, whose throat he had slit. He served a significant prison sentence for that crime and was only released in January 2026.
The fact that a man capable of such ritualistic and savage violence was allowed back into a quiet rural community without apparent supervision or psychological intervention has raised serious concerns. The transition from a prison cell back into society is often delicate, yet in this instance, it appears the system may have failed to identify the persistent threat Patel posed.
His return to Samanna village, rather than being a fresh start, became a countdown to a second, even more grisly tragedy. The local police are now tasked not only with investigating the murder but also with probing the claims of cannibalism, which have sent shockwaves across the state. Authorities are continuing to examine his motives, mental state, and the circumstances surrounding his release.
