From Mizoram To Karnataka, States Announce Crore-Worthy Rewards For Asian Games Champions

From cash incentives for medal winners to special recognition for athletes, states are celebrating India’s 85-medal campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

Several Indian states have announced cash rewards for athletes who won medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, recognising their achievements and historic performances. Haryana, Punjab, Assam, Mizoram, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh are among the states recognising their athletes through financial incentives.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented boxer Lovlina Borgohain with a ₹50 lakh cheque, while Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann honoured rower Satnam Singh with ₹50 lakh. India finished fourth overall with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.

Punjab Recognises Satnam

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann honoured rower Satnam Singh with ₹50 lakh after he won bronze in the men’s double sculls alongside Salman Khan at the Asian Games.

The Punjab Government has also announced a special felicitation for the state’s women cricketers following India’s World Cup triumph, with each player set to receive ₹1.50 crore. These recognitions celebrate sporting achievements across disciplines and highlight the state’s support for athletes representing India.

Assam Rewards Lovlina

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented boxer Lovlina Borgohain with a ₹50 lakh cheque on October 7 after her gold-medal victory in the women’s 75kg category. Borgohain defeated China’s Bao Ziyi in the final to secure the title. The recognition celebrated the boxer’s achievement and her contribution to India’s Asian Games campaign.

Mizoram Honours Hockey Stars

Mizoram recognised Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi, who helped India win gold in women’s hockey. Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced financial rewards for the players, acknowledging their contribution to the national team’s success. Their achievement also brought recognition to Mizoram’s growing presence in Indian sport.

Karnataka Recognises Athletes

Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar announced enhanced cash incentives for the state’s Asian Games medallists during a felicitation ceremony at Vidhana Soudha. He also announced ₹5 lakh each for the 20 athletes who represented Karnataka at the Games. The state introduced a 2% reservation for sportspersons in government recruitment, recognising their achievements and strengthening support for athletes.

Uttar Pradesh Supports Champions

Uttar Pradesh announced a combined ₹28.5 crore in rewards for 20 sportspersons who won medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. The announcement recognised achievements across the two major competitions and highlighted the state government’s support for athletes competing at the international level.

Himachal Pradesh Rewards Medallists

Himachal Pradesh announced financial rewards for its Asian Games medallists, including marathon silver medallist Sawan Barwal and Seema Kumari, who won bronze in the women’s 10,000 metres. The announcements recognised the athletes’ performances and their contribution to India’s campaign.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Recognising athletes through financial rewards is a meaningful way to acknowledge years of discipline, sacrifice and hard work. However, sporting success should also encourage sustained investment in grassroots facilities, coaching, nutrition and opportunities for young athletes, particularly those from underserved communities. Athletes who represent India without winning medals deserve recognition and support, too.

How can governments ensure that the celebration of sporting victories translates into lasting opportunities for the next generation of Indian athletes?
