Indian-American Woman Honoured With Presidential Award By White House For Her Work Against Human Trafficking

Minal Patel Davis, an Indian-American woman has been honoured with a Presidential award by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for her exceptional work against human trafficking in Houston city.

She was appointed Special Adviser on Human Trafficking to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is July 2015 and received the “Presidential Medal for Combating Human Trafficking” in the White House last week at a ceremony in which President Donald Trump was also present. The award is the country’s highest honour in the field.

She said “My parents came here from India. I was the first one in my family born in the US, so to end up in the Mayor’s office a few years ago, and then to now end up in the White House, it was unbelievable”, reported The Hindu.

She has done groundbreaking work against sex slavery and labour exploitation. She achieved this by contributing from a policy-level perspective and advancing systems change.  At present, she is busy with implementing Mayor Turner’s Anti-Human Trafficking Strategic Plan. It is the first comprehensive response to human trafficking at the municipal level in the United States.

Houston is America’s fourth largest city and keeping in mind her important role in combating human trafficking in the city,  she has been invited to speak at many local, national and international panels and present Houston city’s approach.

She has also spoken at the United Nations World Humanitarian Summit and recently visited India and Canada to discuss the role of municipalities in combating human trafficking with the government officials at the request of US State Department.  

She obtained an MBA degree from the University of Connecticut after completing her BA from New York University.
