Microsoft Offers Buyouts To Around 60,000 Employees Across India, US, UK & Canada Amid AI Push

Microsoft has opened a time-limited voluntary exit programme for eligible employees as it reshapes its workforce amid heavy AI investment.

Microsoft has introduced a time-limited Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) for eligible employees in participating teams across India, the US, the UK and Canada, with around 60,000 workers reportedly eligible. The programme, announced on October 26 by Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, is available to employees at internal level 70 and below and offers financial support and career-planning resources to those who choose to leave.

Microsoft has not said that 60,000 employees will leave, nor has it disclosed a target for departures. Eligible employees are being sent individual offer details by email. The move comes as Microsoft continues to reorganise parts of its workforce while investing heavily in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.

Who Is Eligible

The VEO is available to eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating organisations in Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States. Microsoft stressed that the programme does not apply to every employee or every team, with participation determined by individual business priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs.

The company said eligible employees would receive an email containing a link to their individual offer details. Coleman described the programme as a way of giving employees “a new choice” if they are considering a future outside Microsoft, while helping participating organisations adapt to changing workforce requirements.

India’s Role

Microsoft has one of its largest international employee bases in India, with the company saying in December 2025 that it had more than 22,000 employees across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, Noida and other locations. Recent reports put the workforce at around 23,000, although the number of Indian employees eligible for the VEO has not been disclosed.

Reports citing company information say eligible employees in India have until December 1 to decide on the offer. Microsoft’s public announcement, however, does not specify the India-specific deadline.

Previous Workforce Changes

The latest offer follows several workforce changes at Microsoft this year. In July, the company announced around 4,800 role eliminations, equivalent to about 2% of its global workforce, mainly affecting its Commercial and Xbox organisations. Microsoft said the changes reflected shifting customer needs, business priorities and the need to reorganise teams for a rapidly changing technology industry.

The company also said more than 30% of eligible employees had participated in an earlier voluntary retirement programme. Reports put the earlier eligible group at around 8,750 US employees.

AI Investment Continues

The workforce changes are taking place alongside Microsoft’s major investment in AI infrastructure. The company employed approximately 223,000 full-time workers worldwide as of June 30, 2026, according to its annual report. The reported 60,000 employees eligible for the VEO would therefore represent roughly 27% of its global workforce, although this does not mean that 27% of employees will leave. Microsoft has continued to expand its AI and cloud infrastructure, while its India operations are also part of that strategy.

In December 2025, the company announced a $17.5 billion investment in India over four years, building on a separate $3 billion commitment announced earlier that year, and doubled its AI-skilling target in India to 20 million people by 2030.

What Microsoft Says

Microsoft has not publicly characterised the VEO as an AI-driven replacement of workers. Instead, Coleman said the programme would give participating organisations another way to adapt their workforce to changing needs. She also said Microsoft would continue helping employees build new skills and, where appropriate, find new opportunities within the company. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach for every team or every employee,” Coleman said, adding that the company would continue to provide clarity and learn from the new programme.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Voluntary exit programmes can give employees greater control over difficult career decisions, particularly when companies are undergoing major technological and organisational changes. But the scale of Microsoft’s latest offer also highlights the human questions surrounding the AI transition. As businesses invest heavily in automation and new technologies, workers should receive clear communication, fair compensation, opportunities to reskill and genuine support in navigating change.

Innovation should not be measured only by productivity or investment figures; it should also be judged by how responsibly companies treat the people who helped build them. As AI reshapes the workplace, what responsibility should technology companies take to ensure workers are supported rather than simply displaced?
