Meta is launching paid 'Plus' versions of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp alongside premium AI tiers globally to diversify revenue and offset its staggering artificial intelligence infrastructure costs.

Meta has officially launched paid subscription plans globally across its flagship platforms Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp while laying the groundwork to monetise its artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Announced by Meta’s Head of Product, Naomi Gleit, the newly introduced “Plus” plans aim to diversify the company’s revenue streams beyond digital advertising. While the core apps will remain free, users can now pay a monthly fee to access exclusive analytics, advanced insights, and deeper profile customisation. The rollout comes as a strategic move to ease pressure from investors over Meta’s massive financial investments in AI infrastructure, marking a monumental shift in how the tech giant interacts with its global user base.

Monetising User Experience With ‘Plus’ Tiers

Under the new model, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are priced at $3.99 (approximately ₹387) per month, whereas WhatsApp Plus is available for $2.99 (approximately ₹290) per month.

For Instagram users, the subscription unlocks advanced tools, such as metrics on who rewatched their Stories, the ability to view Stories anonymously, and extended visibility beyond the traditional 24-hour window. WhatsApp Plus focuses on messaging personalisation, offering users unique themes, custom ringtones, and premium stickers. Elaborating on the launch via an Instagram video, Naomi Gleit stated that the company is rolling out these plans globally “with more plans in the works for businesses, creators and artificial intelligence products.” Crucially, Meta clarified that these offerings will exist independently of its pre-existing “Meta Verified” badges, meaning account verification and impersonation protection will still require a separate subscription.

The Road To Meta One And AI Expansion

This subscription drive is heavily linked to Meta’s aggressive pivot toward generative artificial intelligence. The tech giant revealed that its capital expenditure primarily dedicated to building AI data centres is projected to reach a staggering $125 billion to $145 billion this year.

To help offset these astronomical infrastructure costs, Meta will begin testing paid AI subscription tiers next month in select countries, including Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia. The basic AI tier, “Meta One Plus,” will cost $7.99 per month, while the advanced “Meta One Premium” will be priced at $19.99 per month, offering heavy users expanded compute capacity, video generation, and deep reasoning tools. Helen Ma, Meta’s Head of Subscriptions, told Bloomberg that the ultimate goal is to consolidate these fragmented services under a single ecosystem brand called “Meta One,” creating a seamless, paid cross-platform experience.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The shift toward a multi-tiered, paid social media ecosystem forces us to reflect on the changing nature of human connection in the digital age.

For over a decade, social platforms have functioned as democratic, virtual town squares where every voice had equal weight, regardless of financial standing. By locking advanced visibility, analytics, and enhanced interaction tools behind a paywall, we risk fragmenting these spaces into economic hierarchies where influence is bought rather than earned. Furthermore, as advanced AI tools become restricted by financial limits, a new digital divide may emerge, limiting access to technological growth for those who cannot afford it. While businesses must adapt to financial pressures, tech companies must remember that true community is built on inclusivity, empathy, and equal opportunity for dialogue.
